It's Fun to Play the Piano ... Please Pass It On!
I just got "dared" to do a totally serious thread. At first, I nearly couldn't think of a topic to not go off topic about, and then all of a sudden it came to me.
"Royalist" music. (as opposed to parliamentarian or Roundhead music)
If there was a Costitutional crises in the UK, where The Queen VS parliamnet.
I would side with the Queen, for the following reasons. You get to get long hair and wear feathers and carry a sword. Cavalier attitudes are acceptable. You get given a big estate and a title, and can play rug slidey games in your stately home.
But if you sided with oliver cromwell, you get to go to church every sunday, no music and no maids. And one of the worst haircuts ever imagined.
But what is Royalist music? apart from say "god save the Queen" what else could I learn to play that would interest and amuse our wonderfull unique monarchy?
I know Queeny loves things like March militaire by schubert, and probably a little hendrix, but what really constitutes Royalist music?
I don't want to get it wrong, because I like my head on my shoulders and not in a basket. This is a totally serious thread, the first person to go "off topic" will be to blame and it wont be my fault at all.

The Royal Ballet has done it's version of Alice in wonderland which of course features The Queen of hearts (off with her head) This is the first Totally new production in twenty years, and is destined for great success, if you haven't seen it , you should.
It has some extremelt funny moments in it and Zenaida Yanowsky who plays the Queen of hearts is extremely talented, and very very funny. Check out this clip.

I am new to this forum and beg forgiveness in advance for my uncertain and provincial manners, however I am disturbed to find I may be a closet royalist.

Long hair, check. Sword, check. Feathers - I'm fairly certain I have a couple of feather boas available from past parties -- and your being English\British I'm assuming that's what you meant by "wearing feathers".
Cavalier attitudes are acceptable. Well yes. But frankly my dear I don't give a damn.

Music? Well, it being Independence day here I suggest:
I know you mentioned "God Save the Queen" - but enough of that typcial old farty hoi polloi - jazz it up a little and give it a new lease of life, if you're going to go all Royalist on us.
And when it comes to that, you just can't beat Our Bri on the roof of Buck House itself.
Haydn is a safe bet. I would also go with Handel. Handel wrote for King George, and many of his pieces, such as the Water Music suite, are available for piano. You could have your piano set on a barge and cruise the Thames. Just don't get your piano wet - especially if you are playing the cardboardanna.
Purcell? Some of his Volontaries are great fun. A bit of Elgar, Pomp and Circumstance?
And just to lighten things up, I think a bit of Gilbert and Sullivan would be in order. I'd go with HMS Pinafore first because you've got Her Majesty's Ship right off the bat, to set things on the right track.

It is also advisible to wear the correct coloured arm band on the field of battle so one is not attacked by one's comrades. Probably also advisible to have the opposition colour in a handy pocket for a quick change. All feathery hats should be left at home and used soley for obsequious bows to the reigning monarch, whilst keeping a suitable distance to prevent tickling said royal's nose.
2 that spring to mind if your name is/was Charles...."My Bonny lies over the ocean", closely followed by "I am Sailing"
Although I like the pseudo tranny Cavalier costume I'm afraid I'd have to be a Roundhead because I just don't get ballet jokes or humour.
I do laugh at people falling off of bicycles and things. Mr T now has his own show on BBC3. It's called "World's craziest fools" or something like that. Lots of people falling off things. I watched it and had trouble containing my waters.
Roundhead music would have to be simple like "the birdy song" or "Whats amadda you shaddapa your face" or that god awful Furry Lisa.
Perhaps it would be appropriate to have some music by ...QUEEN, for Her Majesty THE Queen? I think "We are the Champions" would be a good choice.

SlyCat, this is the absolute truth, I was in a crowd of folk that booed Bryan May and the rest of Queen off stage.
The Reason? They were the support band to Mott The Hoople. They came on Half an hour late, everyone there went to see MTH. After just two attempted songs Queen were totally booed off. Their manager came out on stage and said a classic; "IF you dont stop booing, Queen will not come back on stage" With this cue, we didn't and they didn't, job done.
MTH came on with a blistering set, Aerial bender instead Of Micky Ronson (RIP MIcky you well loved Yorkie) And Lyndsey De Paul guested for the bridge on Roll away the stone. Mott were soon to split up, but their legacy lived on added to by Hunters solo albumns often co-written With Mick Ronson,Who Mott the hoople Had "purloined" from Bowies spiders from mars.
2009 saw something staggering happen.
Mott the Hoople reformed for a what was initially to be a couple of dates. The ticket sales took everyone by surprise, sold out in minits. No one was more surprised than Ian Hunter. They extended their reunion to a whole week at Hammersmith odeon in London.
I met folk outside the venue that had travelled from California, Philedelphia, Norway, Canada, Germany, and a couple from Australia, who told me they had spent their retirement pension getting and staying here for the week.
Folk had come from the world over.
Some had waited forty years for this, never believing it would happen. Dudes and Dudettes packed the house, The House lights went off and Holsts Jupiter was played, as the lights came back up, I was trying to hold back a flood of tears, a big dude next to me said "Your not on your own bro" he had tears, and never have I actually seen as many grown folk with tears,everywhere I looked.
MTH came on stage like a bunch of twenty year olds, this was not going to be some sedate reunion of passive old timers oh no. Hunter jumped up in the air and came down with the opening chords of HYmn for the dudes blasting over the tale end of jupiter, and everyone ran to the front of the stage...just like you are meant to do if enjoying oneself at a rock concert.
MT hooples original drummer Dale griifin (buffin) had been ill, he has altzheimers, and his condition had worsened, he was replaced with Martin chambers from the pretenders who did a first class job. There were two drumkits on stage, so we knew something was going to happen concerning them.
Ian Hunters daughter, Tracey Hunter (who has her own band) Pheobe white, and Mick Ronsons daughter LIsa Ronson were Motts backing singers.
Joe eliiot from Def leopard was on stage with Hoople, and at one point he actually escorted someone who had got on stage off, into the wings.
Mott were astonishing, full of energy, Hunter never staying still, moving around more than most shoe gazing twenty year olds, almost unbelieveable to think he is in his seventies. A truly uplifting and inspirational force.
For three numbers as an encore, Buffin was helped onto stage and to his drum kit, To a rapture of applause from the crowd Martin chambers nursed him through the three numbers. Tinged with sadness as this was, it was a fitting end to the show that had seen Hunter, Verden allen, and Overend watts on their feet for a full two hours without a break.
For a short while, in London, at the Hammersmith, Rock n Roll had returned with a vengence.
And all the young and not so young dudes went away happy.

Ian Hunter one of the best all time "Rock Ballad" writers, CASINITALY you have surprised me...
Usually seen on the keyboard/Piano.. he also plays guitar..
