I'm interested in the best way to sync files from a PC to an I pad. I'd like to be able to call up my customer list from my I pad when I'm on the road. I'm working in .xls format. I tried drop box, but scrolling my customer list within it is too slow to be usable. I'm checking into Google docs, but the I pad program (g docs) for that also is very slow when scrolling. It's as if the programs are re drawing the whole list every time I scroll.

Although I can manually move the file, I suppose, an automated, up to date sync would be preferred.

I've a feeling that trying to mix and match devices (windows pc, Droid phone, and I Pad) may not be the best long term platform.

Not sure if this would help. but www.box.net has an Iphone/Ipad app. You could sign up on their site for free, and dload the app, which is free, and try it out.

Personally I avoid Apple products and stick with PC and Android since the proprietary hassles with Apple (and the fact that everything Apple always cost more) is very annoying to me. (Don't even get me started with the nightmare that is iTunes).

I love being able to build my own PC and do all sorts of modifications on my Android phone.
I don't appreciate proprietary mentality that Apple lives by and having a company tell me what I can and cannot do with my own phone after I have bought it.

With an iPhone most of my friends have to jailbreak it to be able to do some of the things they want.
If I want more memory in my phone I just buy a small micro SD memory card and slip it in. Same thing with a battery.
With an iPhone I've got to buy a whole new phone if I want to get more memory. No thanks.

Bob, I should have added that I have had a box.net account for many years, and have had the Ipad/Iphone app for over a year. I have not had any trouble with either of them.

Well there you go, ask a simple question and get an Apple bash! I have to laugh when people complain that you can't stick a memory card in it. The reason for memory cards in the first place was to expand memory. When you're carrying enough internal memory around that you don't need to expand it, what's the purpose of adding a card that you have to carry around? I can't remember the last time I used a memory card on any platform. Probably around the last time I used a floppy disc! As for jailbreaking, most of the time that is to add Flash, which is 20 year old technology designed for mice and keyboards and is being eclipsed by HTML5.

But I digress. Personally I use Dropbox on my iPhone and iPad and have no problems with it. And fwiw, I run a bunch of systems here: Windows 7, Mac OSX, and Linux. Each have their strengths and weaknesses.

Hey Loren,

An apple bash? Here you will enjoy this video….

But what do you do when your blackberry’s not working? Just so you know; Orange is a telecommunications giant in the UK, black spots are areas with no cell signal, and a dongle is a piece of hardware not common for consumer use, but are used for video editing, audio engineering, and architecture software.

At 1:53 of this video the actor Harry Enfield (replaces the Ronnie that passed away) is almost breaking down into laughter…

Well, investing in Apple is a much better idea than investing in someone who has to jailbreak his phone, just as investing in Chevron is better than investing in someone who makes his own gasoline.

I just got a new I phone and have tried syncing with my MS Outlook on my home computer using the I Cloud feature. First attempt seems to work ok but I will need to work on it to get comfortable with all the features.

I use a Apple app called "GoodReader" The way it is used is to put any files you want to transfer onto your desktop, or anywhere you can find them. I prefer the desktop, the next step is to connect your iPad to your PC and open iTunes and your device will be listed, then open "GoodReader" under Apps and drag the files from the desktop into the GoodReader. I export my customers, todays work, active Clients from Access as a Excel Doc. The GoodReader will take any File type. From memory it's not a cheap app but is rated as 5 stars for about $39.00

I use Google Calendar. I can set customer names to "reoccur" when it's time for their piano to be tuned. I can do this all on my desktop computer, and it will sync it to my iPhone Google calendar app. I even can put their phone number in the "description" box and when I open it on my iPhone, it recognizes that it is a phone number and I can even dial the number by simply pressing the number. On the app there is a search box at the top to search by customer name. It's so nice when I see a customer at church or around town and they ask me when their piano is due to be tuned, I simply pull out my phone and look up their name and know instantly. That paired with my Tunelab iPhone app, makes my little iPhone a pretty powerful addition to my business.

Do you answer the phone during a tuning?

Not normally, unless it is an emergency. I usually just let them leave a message.

I just went through the same stuff with my new Windows phone/new Windwos 7 Computer sync stuff. Because Windows 7 no longer supports "Active Sync" (usb synching with outlook and PDA), my PDA is obsolete...

I spent a few hours on the phone with my phone company's tech support to get it sorted out. We went with Google calendar. I had to import all of my OUtlook contacts in a file, but the calender now syncs beautifully with Google calendar and the Windows phone. You could also get a windows 365 program to do the same thing, but it has a monthly service charge.

I really preferred the PDA and phone being separate. And I liked the It's sort of a pain having to leaf through different layers to get from phone to calendar, and vice versa. Also, this particular version of windows 7.5 phone doesn't seem to allow cut/copy and paste.

What are you using for a PDA? I'm still using a Palm. I found http://www.chapura.com/ and they have software that may help you

I loved my palm phone with calendar. The raised button keyboard made typing quick and accurate. I could easily type in a customer's info into the calendar, accurately while they were on the phone.

I've been using an IPAQ for about 11 years. I'm getting used to the using the new phone for calendar and contacts, but I now find it far easier to do scheduling at home. The IPAQ is still great as a dedicated tuner (and chess opponent when customers are late grin ).
