Every key from the 2nd lowest F# 'clicks' when I press it. What is this?

Has this clicking just started recently or has something changed recently (has the piano been moved, etc…)?

As pianos get a little age on them, the action can make a slight “clicking noise” if the key is depressed and released very slowly. In fact, I’ve read various threads here on PW of that happening even on some high-end pianos.

Usually, it is not noticeable when playing normally, but may be noticeable if playing the note very slowly or perhaps abnormally. This happens on my Yamaha C7… but I don’t hear it when playing normally… I can hear the slight “click” if I depress the key and release it very slowly.

Maybe some the pro-techs will chime in with more detailed info.

Something found it's way into the piano. (that's my best blind as a bat guess)

What kind of piano is it?

It's a Yamaha G2 in near perfect condition. I just started noticing it today when I started my morning practice. It can't be that a penny fell into the piano or something because it is like 20 keys that do this. From the 2nd lowest F# all the way down to the first A.

That's not it. The piano keys from the second lowest F# all the way down to A1 click when I strike them at any rate. Fast, hard, mild. Doesn't matter. I just noticed this a few hours ago. I have had the piano for a while.

Have you actually looked inside yet to see if there is anything obvious?

20 keys is too long for a pencil and certainly a coin (though it could be two pencils)--- he must have lost a ruler or a drumstick. If there's a child in the house it could be all kinds of things, literally unguessable.

So lostaccato, if you can see something that's dropped into the case, you may be able to reach it out with a kitchen tongs, if not your hand. Otherwise, call your tech.

I've rejected icicles and mice as likely culprits--- please tell me it couldn't be.

It might not be that something got dropped in there, but one place to look is behind the fall board. If I am correct you can just lift the fall board out on a G2. If not, there are probably screws on each end. You might not even have to remove it. You might be able to tip it forwards and look under it with a flashlight.

Good suggestion.

Also, is there a possibility the fall board dowel on one end is out of its slot/hinge?

My curiosity is up, but there is nothing I can do about it from here… smile

Call your technician. If you do not have one, get one. You can really screw up your piano trying to fix something that may be simple for someone who sees the piano to diagnose and repair.

I don't allow anything except my sheet music to be placed on or around the piano.

I know it is frustrating to you; but at this point, I agree with BDB… your best option may be to call your piano technician. If it is something simple, perhaps you can get the problem solved with minimal cost.

And, by all means, let us all know what the problem was.

Good luck.

If you can place a recording we may have bigger chances to guess right smile . But I realize it can be hard to record faint clicks

I always use what the composer directs OR I just use what feels natural. I don't ever need to write my own down. It's in my head!

And I will update this once I have my technician come look at it. Thanks everyone.

Hmmmm.... sounds to me like the lower portion of the Sostenuto rail came loose at the bass end, because the area you are describing is nearly from the break to the end of the piano - the length of that rod. A simple fix but have a TECH do it!

Impossible to give any kind of accurate diagnosis or cost estimate without even knowing what the problem is from this distance. You will likely be in for a service call charge plus whatever time it takes to fix it.....

Hammer rest rail mount screws will click when loose.

For a lot of possibilities, it will be a minimal charge if you have the piano tuned at the same time. Most of the time we spend on repairs is getting to and from the piano. If you do not have someone to service your piano regularly, chances are your piano needs tuning, anyway.
