Good news, Karnevil.

BTW, classical music is not the only demanding music on earth! smile I for example managed to reproduce the issue on a N1 playing some Red Garland and Oscar Peterson- style block chords and voicings. I love and play a bit of classical music myself, but I think jazz really is the most complex music ever existed. I absolutely love it when classical pianists think they're able to play jazz anytime they want... eek

Try one of Scriabin's later Sonatas (e.g. No.5) for simple, jazzy harmonies and technical simplicity grin.

Oscar Peterson is one of the giants, very technically proficient *and* musical indeed! My favourite recordings of Peterson are the "Exclusively for my friends" records from the 60s, some amazing playing here. (Also Art Tatum wasn't too bad.. wink )

@Karnevil,

Your woes with the N1 is not the end of the story here, as I currently own a Casio AP-620 (flagship model) that has a sustain pedal resonance issue. The problem is that sometimes the pedal sticks (only in regards to the sounds carrying over, not the pedal itself), especially when using the Piano/Strings layer. The issue can also occur when just using standard piano sounds as well. It is like keeping your foot down on the pedal as the resonance continues, which is both unexpected and aggravating.

I had the first AP-620 replaced, and, the 2nd one I have now still does the same thing, so, nothing is perfect in the world of DP's. Had to get the V-Piano, as at least it does not have the resonance issue, but it does have keys that wear. Doesn't matter what you buy or what the cost is, defects abound.

It is easy to see why a cheaper, less expensive model (like the AP-620) could have a pedal/resonance issue, however, do not understand why a 7K digital (like the V-Piano) would have flaky keys?

Extra note:

Your N1 resonance effect is nothing like the sustain pedal resonance issue of the Casio AP-620 as it is a far worse internal problem. Had sent a number of audio recordings to Casio which had captured the glitch, although they didn't take it seriously.

Also, glad to hear that your N1 had a fix, as you are one of the very few lucky ones out there that have received pertinent help.

If I don't like the behavior of the Casio at times when this issue raises its ugly head, then I go to the V-Piano.

However, with wearing keys on the V-Piano, then I have to switch back to the Casio, again.

Is there a decent digital without any problems?

Not likely... smirk

Now, if they only could fix that exaggerated (and annoying!) sustain pedal resonance effect, then I would be REALLY happy.

This is great news! Thanks Karnevil. Could you tell how you got it updated? Can it be easily done at home with a computer that has internet?

Yes, I was very happy about this. smile All you need is to get the right files and instructions from Yamaha (or me), and update the piano using a usb drive. I just got the files, and will update later this day. The new version is 1.02. Now, go and buy yourself an AvantGrand N1! wink

I've not seen anything in the N1, N2 or N3 user manuals about firmware updates for the AG.

kippesc, it could be that Yamaha does not include information about firmware updates in the AvantGrand owner's manual because the instruments are not really targeted at 'techie' users. It could also be argued that firmware update information suggests to users that future software updates are planned by the company, when this may not actually be the case.

For what its worth, Kawai digital piano owner's manuals do not include firmware update information for these reasons. However, the MP10 is an exception. wink

Cheers,
James

Just updated the firmware to v1.02. Yes, much better now. The pedal ressonance effect is still exaggerated, but the response from the keyboard is now fixed. smile
Btw, when you update, make sure the usb memory drive is formatted to FAT16 (otherwise it won't work).
Phew! smile

I too have looked at Yamaha's support page (and searched) for the AvantGrand and saw no firmware update.

Where exactly is this information to be found?

You should contact your dealer or Yamaha support directly. Does your N3 also have this issue? If not, I wouldn't worry about upgrading your firmware. Good luck anyways. smile

Congrats! smile And many thanks! Some people thought that it was a fuss about nothing but it really was essential for me. Now, let me get an N1 wink
