If you've been following along with a certain post, you'll know where this is comin' from. I have an idea.. maybe it's too much to ask for but I hope not.
The idea is that maybe the software writers who programmed this site could do an update. I was thinking basically a "thumbs up/thumbs down" system identical to YouTube's. This would make it easier for people to approve or disapprove of a specific post by a specific user. It would also be easier for the mods to take action. Of course, this would take more programming but it was just a thought.. I thought it'd be useful.

lostaccato, many moons ago the forum used to have a "star" system wherein users could rate other users on a 5-point star scale. This created many tsunamis of controversy and bitter recriminations, and it ended up being virtually useless. We also tried later a system whereby individual threads (maybe individual posts? I can't remember) were rated, and that also caused more headaches than it helped. Most of us who have been here during times we had ratings vs. times we didn't agree that it is better without the ratings. It's pretty easy to tell quickly whether a given post or user has any merit.

I strongly oppose the idea of a "thumbs up/thumbs down" judging of posts on this site. A similar system of rating threads and/or posts was suggested once before and opposed by almost all. We are a community of like-minded individuals sharing our interest and passion for music. The thought that each post has the potential to be "judged" on its merits and based solely on the subjective view of the individual reading it is ludicrous and leads to the kind of abuse that we need strongly to avoid. Why do our posts need to be publicly judged and rated? Are we not intelligent enough to decide for ourselves the merits of individual threads and posts without having to rate them? Bad idea! Give me a thumbs down, if you will. I still say it's a bad idea. Regards,

I think it's an awful idea. And not just because I'd get thumbsdown on everything. (Good suggestion, bad idea.)

Me too, don't get me wrong. And I use it for educational, teaching, promotional and entertainment reasons. But I've rarely commented and I find most comments obnoxious by 12 year olds who think that swearing is a way to be heard...

Mark does it all the time. And then adds imaginary people he calls "we" to agree with him.
