Hey guys!

I'm a new member of this forum. Here's a little about myself: I've been using an upright playing piano for years (on and off) but I'm moving to smaller place and so I need a new piano. This is my first digital piano.

So Costco has been having a Yamaha roadshow across the U.S. this month, selling Clavinova CLP and CVPs, a couple of upright models, and a baby grand. I just ordered a CLP 430 in Rosewood for $1999.99 + tax. The next model up they had was the CLP 440, at $2799. The seller also gave me free shipping (which he didn't give everyone else - I know because I saw people paying for shipping with my own eyes) and is uploading 500 songs to a USB drive I gave him. Costco only let him sell 8 CLP 430s and he sold out in the first 2 days. He has several models left currently.

The CLP 430 sounded great and felt really nice. Obviously I could tell the difference in the higher models (440 ivorite keys were a nice touch, and speakers sounded better) but I don't think it would be worth the price. All "improvements" were very, very subtle.

For a long time I had been considering the YDP-161, but the guy really sold me on the Clavinova (430). It did sound better than the time I'd tried the YDP-161 at Guitar Center. I'm not sure if it's because of the AWM in the YDP vs. the RGE and GH3 in the Clav. I guess there's also sort of a prestige factor and better resale value with the Clavinva. Do you guys have any other opinions here on the differences between YDP 161 and CLP 430?

Back to the story - During all of this, I also called a very reputable piano shop in my area and told him about the Costco deal. He said he could beat $2000 but couldn't discuss it specifically over the phone. I'm guessing he would've offered $1900. Then I told him about the free shipping and he said he simply couldn't do that - in fact he doesnt know how Costco does either. I didn't tell him they threw it in for me. Anyways he said his price would probably come out to be the same as Costco in the end, with shipping and the discount.

I know I probably should've joined this forum/asked this question before I made my purchase, but in any case, I'd like to know what you experts think - how did I do? Any opinions/thoughts on this piano? Any advice going forward? Thanks!

Well, inasmuch as they differ the clavinova is (should be) better in every way. It's got a three sensor action, the newer sound engine, and better speakers. And you liked the sound, so that makes it good.

When people say a buy like this isn't good it's because they feel that the additional features weren't worth the money. But since we don't know how much that extra money was worth to you, we can't really say. The CLP430 is a solid piano and among the clavinovas one of the best buys, if not the best.

Pricewise, well, Yamaha doesn't sell clavinovas over the internet so we just have the prices paid thread as a reference. The only person who has posted their price paid $2100 for it, so I think you got a fair/good deal.
