We are looking for a baby Grand and found a local post: Kawai Baby Grand Piano Model: KG-1E Made in Japan Year: 1987 Size: 5'4" Color: Ebony (Black) Serial Number: 17XXXXX
We knew little about any old Piano. It is described as "like New" condition. Should we invest our time and effort in this or just get a brand new Yamaha GB1K for a few hundreds more (end up to be the same if we consider the inspection, toning.....) from costco... Thanks

The price seems a little on the high side, if you ask me; but the Kawai is a fine instrument and may be worth it. If it was a KG-2 or 3 the price might be more in line with the used piano market (if there is such a thing). I've seen samples of that make, model, and year for much less.
On the other hand, condition is everything. If it is in pristine, like new condition, it might be worth it.
Have you played both the Kawai and the new Yamaha? Which one do you like the best? (That is what matters the most)
Good luck, and keep us informed!
Rick

Thanks for the input. We tried some new ones at a store, I liked the Yamaha C1, as it is bright and clear but my wife like the richness of the Kawai GM30, so we may take a look later. BTW does Duplex scaling make a huge difference? As I heard that the this Kawai does not have it. Thanks. The owner has lowered the price too.

BTW does Duplex scaling make a huge difference? As I heard that the this Kawai does not have it. Some high-end European made grand pianos do not have a duplex scale... that should tell you something. Go with what appeals to you the most… in terms of tone and touch, and what you can afford. Good luck and keep us informed! Rick

Duplex scale will not make much difference. I think in general, the duplex scale is just a selling feature because it is often associated with Steinway. The Kawai is a fine grand. The description of "like new" condition could mean just about anything though. As Rick noted, the price seems a wee bit on the high side. Best wishes to you and good luck.
