I was just wondering whether any of you'll pretend to conduct(in the air) while listening to orchestral music?

Just asking out of curiosity(and to feel more normal).

As for me, with the score.

"Air conducting"....I love it. I do it all the time. Must be careful when driving, however.

So you do that too? Left hand on the wheel, right hand conducting... Beethoven's 'Consecration of the House' just HAD to be air conducted, even at 65 mph.

I am an excellent pretend conductor. I do, however, have a bad habit of doing it in the car. (I'm a very safe driver, but I do tend to draw stares from time to time.)

I conduct and dance at the same time in my own home (and sometimes accidentally at work or in the car in my seat).

Of course. As a matter of fact, I feel such a strong urge to conduct that I find it difficult to sit quietly during a real orchestral performance. That's why I prefer medici.tv.

However, my partner thought I was going a bit far when I built a conductor's podium.

ALL THE TIME. But much more with a capella choir music than with orchestral music.

I conduct everything though, even solo piano music (even solo violin music).

Back in London, I was singing with my kids 'the wheels on the bus go round and round' while doing all the moves and air conducting a bit. At a red light the driving instructor in front of me, gets off his car and starts coming aggressively over. When he reaches us, I open the window and he sees the kids singing and understands that I wasn't actually mocking his driving student in front of us for the past 10 minutes, but was really having fun with the kids!

EDIT: I should note that I am a safe driver and the above situation was at 15 mph! The driving school car was going EXTREMELY SLOW!

EDIT2: Then again I should note that it seems to me the car has a mind on its own and seems to follow the music. Dvorcak 9th playing? After the small intro the car goes faster... Shostakovich 10th/2nd movement? The car is quite aggressive. I've no idea how this is happening!

At least you aren't doing what V. Persichetti used to do - he commuted by car between NYC and Philadelphia quite a bit, and would tape score paper to the steering wheel and compose music while driving!

Theodore Antoniou (prof. in Boston and a great greek composer) is said to compose a lot in the plane. Which lead him to some interesting scribles... evident that the plane was rumbling quite a lot!

Rossini overtures are very dangerous for me.

In College, we had to conduct in front of a mirror...

I found myself conducting with my LH when it wasn't playing for part of a piano piece. I thought that was odd.

Conducting while driving? No ... but once I was listening to a car race on the radio while driving and noticed I was going 90 MPH ... and there were still a few cars that were passing me
