I just set up our new keyboard. (p95) The stand is the proline pl200 It wobbles. The keyboard also moves freely on top. For now, it's set up in front of a shelf to prevent the instrument from falling off. (I don't have a readily available wall right now.) Is it normal for the stand to be wobbly? It really bugs me. The stand is on hard floor (laminate), so the floor is all even and flat. Is the stand defective? Or is some other stand better? Should I take it back?

Also is there some other appropriate stand that would get shorter? I put my son in a high office chair with a car booster seat on top in order to get him at a proper playing level. The pedal is on a thick book. I tried the booster on the kitchen chair and that was not sufficient. When we go camping, I'll have a booster that can come out of the van, but the chairs will be on the short side. The keyboard and stand are big enough. I really don't want to have to stuff a piano stool in my van as well.

Sorry but that stand is very poor - X frame stands are rubbish for 88 note keyboards but if you MUST have one, you need double braced - the PL-200 is single braced and they are awful things. If you can take it back I recommend that you do and replace it with something like this:

I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for a keyboard stand. The one I bought was $50, so something around there would be preferable.

Someone on here will make a personal recommendation I'm sure but either of those choices look fine to me. And you don't need to spend a fortune on a stand that will be very stable.

I used to have a double X-stand with something like a sphere on the intersection and that sphere had some internal teeth so you can change the height in very precise steps. Well, the thing is that after two weeks I found my RD-700SX on the floor and the stand mechanism torn up... My heart would tear up at that moment. Fortunately the Roland was intact with only a minor scratch on the bottom. And the stand was advertised as a very sturdy one.

So, my recommendation is to avoid stands with teeth mesh (not sure about the term in English) and go for simpler and non-breakable designs.

Just make sure that you can get the stand down to a height that is roughly in line with a standard piano, i.e. about 28-29 inches from floor to the top of the white keys once the digital piano is placed on the stand. I suspect that the table-type stand that is available at B&H will allow for this, but it's worth checking.

can't you just shim the stand's legs to level it? Try velcro to keep the P95 secure - it is pretty light. No need to spend any money on all this, IMO.

The P-85 had cutouts on the bottom that made using a stand problematic, but I thought they had resolved that with the P-95 by putting some metal pieces across the gaps? Does yours have these?

The stand itself wobbles - all single-X stands do. They are totally unsuitable for pianos.

Sometimes a keyboard will have rubber bumpers mounted underneath to protect surfaces and they can get in the way of the stand. I'm guessing your problem is simply that you're using an X stand.

There's a standard saying, friends don't let friends buy X stands.

I've tried just about every type of stand there is. The only one that is perfect has the look of a 1950's dinette set - the stand with four telescoping legs mounted at near 90 degree angles to a rectangle that the keyboard rests on. I tried one of those and it was fine except I hated the way it looked.

I bought the QuikLok Monolith ( http://www.quiklok.com/catalog/?p=productsMore&iProduct=70&sName=M-91 ) which is nice in that it folds flat. It is rather heavy though and the height adjustment is in increments which may or may not be the right height for you if you're real fussy.

I wish someone would make a keyboard stand that is a sturdy and lightweight as the Ultimate Support stands I use for my Bose 802 speakers. They are super light and can support 150 lbs\68 kg ... and Ultimate Support has an incredible support system. I left my speaker stands in the car overnight in below freezing temperature and the plastic braces cracked. They sent me parts very promptly. The original carry bags stated flaking on their inside surface and I called Ultimate Support to ask if I could put them in the washer to remove that plastic lining. They sent me new carrying cases to my address here in the Netherlands (even though I bought them in the US).

To the original poster, go back to your music store and try something else, something that you can return if you're still not happy.

What do you vets think of Z stands, like the ones by On-Stage and Roland?

I have a heavy duty On-Stage two-tier Z-stand, and it is rock solid; no wobble or bounce. It's quite heavy, and since I found the incredibly light K&M 18880 folding table-style stand that is also completely stable and perfect for gigging, the On-Stage has been relegated to studio use.

VP, that stand weighs less than 5 pounds?

It holds your FP7f okay? It should be good for an RD700NX, then, I imagine...

I usually put my MP6 on it (47lbs) plus my Numa organ and Plugiator (circa 25lbs) on the second tier arms that I added. According to the info on the B&H site (where it's on sale for $175) it can hold a single board of up to 110.23 lbs (50kg).

I had a P-85 and chose this type of stand a couple of years ago when I started learning. As others have mentioned, with a Yamaha sitting on it the keys are at about 28 inch height, ie normal piano keyboard height, but that seems to be the lowest it'll go. You may wish to put some thin felt between the table top surface and the the P-95 on top to eliminate possible buzzing. It seems to be widely sold under other brand names, such as Stagg and Tiger. In the UK, its about 30GBP so USD 50 is about right. I now have a CP33 (50% heavier) and its fine.
