Sorry if this is a stupid question, I've never heard of this model of piano. Is it discontinued? Is it an acoustic piano? To explain: a dealer told me he has a pre-owned one with 'silent' function for sale, built in 2005 (P112 NTS), and I was wondering... TIA.

It is discontinued, it was replaced with a 114. I think they stopped making them in 2009

I have one though smile

I love it. It is a hybrid - a real acoustic, with a really good digital option.
When you press and lock the middle pedal, the hammers are prevented from hitting the strings.
Hit the switch and you get digital, which Yamaha calls "Silent".

It is a smallish piano - only 112cm high - but as we live in an apartment it is plenty big - and the sound is really great.

I don't know what he's asking for it, but you should know that the silent feature alone can cost between 1,500 and 2,000.

The silent feature does NOT have any other voices - you only have your piano voice, and there is a reverb dial. Mine has 2 outlet jacks for headphones. This is great when I want to record, I can listen and have the piano hooked up directly to the computer.

When I was buying mine, I couldn't figure out where it had been made and I asked Chris Venables (who participates in this forum and has a piano shop in the UK) for help.

Here is part of his reply to me:

".... your piano definitely was made in the Yamaha Kemble factory in Milton Keynes. The P112 was replaced a few years ago by the P114 which in turn was discontinued last year when the factory closed. (2009)

It's a good piano for its size and has a German solid spruce soundboard."

I'm extremely happy with mine.

Thanks for your response, casinitaly. I guess I will go and check it out. I have been thinking primarily of a U1, or even better (if I can get a second-hand one) a U3.

[rant: Unfortunately the "silent" requirement adds so much to the price of an acoustic, given that I don't want a digital piano. Add to that the fact there are not that many silent acoustic pianos available on the second-hand market, if I didn't have neighbour issues I could get a lot more "normal" piano for my money; and if I had a larger budget I could get a brand new silent.... :-( rant over]

KCharalambous, I had been thinking of a U2 or U3 also - but when I heard the tone of this piano I was really pleased with it, and the silent feature really was a big plus for me.

Yes, I could have used the same money to get a better "normal" piano - but in the end, this has been just the perfect piano for me, in my situation.

Good luck with your search!
