Greeting to fine members of Piano World:

I’m looking for piano music that has a Spanish flavor to it that would be playable by a intermediate level player. Perhaps there is some Spanish guitar music transcribed for piano? Maybe some piano works by Spanish composers? Perhaps there are some newer works that feature the “Spanish Sound”?

Any recommendations? ¡muchas gracias!

Enrique Granados (1867-1916) has a collection called Twelve Spanish Dances which are considered to be intermediate in difficulty. Granados also wrote piano music which is considered to be quite difficult.

I am currently working on Spanish Dance #5, which is also known as "Playera" or "Andaluza". I've really been enjoying this piece and plan to work on Spanish Dance #2 (Oriental) soon.

Best wishes on finding a piece of music which resonates with you.

You could try Dello Joio's Prayer of the Matador.

There are a lot of interesting Spanish baroque pieces. Look for Mateo Albeniz and Antonio Soler to start.

Oo, I really like this Mompou. Has that faraway Debussy/Satie feel but somehow warmer. I just put Scenes d'Enfants on 'the list'.

It's out of my reach right now, but I'd love to play Albeniz's Sevilla:

You can't do better than Albèniz's Asturias, made famous by John Williams et al in guitar arrangements. It's actually an original piano work despite sounding like a guitar piece. And it's a lot easier to play than it looks. Honestly grin.

Sevilla is a blast to play, I learned it a couple of years ago. But as with all Albeniz, what seems straightforward turns out to be very difficult. I've learned (and tried to learn) many Albeniz pieces, and most of them are very demanding, but in a way you don't notice until you physically try to play them!

A recommendation of an intermediate Albeniz piece that's just beautiful and fun to learn:

You may want to look up the music of Joaquin Turina as well; I'd start with his Danzas Gitanas, op. 55. Great early-20th Spanish composer.

Don't forget this wonderful piece:
Soiree dans Grenade by Debussy.

This is an incredibly beautiful, not too difficult (so easily intermediate level, I am guessing) piece with a haunting Spanish flavor.

Albeniz Cordoba. It's not too difficult and is pretty fun to play. smile

There are many intermediate-level gems to be found among Nin-Culmell's Tonadas. Here's Alicia de Larrocha doing some...
