Hi,

I've taken a look at a couple of Yamaha YUX pianos at different retailers. I liked the feel and sound of them but thought that the prices were high. Asking price has been consistently around $7000 which seems high for nearly 30 year old pianos, even if they are good. If in cood condition, can I expect many more years of service, and are these reasonable prices?

Thanks,

I know a lot of people find the YUX desirable from that vintage. When I went looking for my new Yamaha YUS5 a lot of the Yamaha dealers gave me a lot of history and detail behind the YUX.

I think your money would be better spent on a new Yamaha U3 for around $9000 if you can reach that. I would not do $7000 but then again I am no expert.

I saw few YUX in decent condition around $4500 around here (well, this was after their "instructor referral discount" original listed price was around $6500). But they were not in a great condition (the key action wasn't uniform, some stain on the inside of the cabinet, possible water/mold issues, etc. nothing that can't be fixed, but not sure. I'm not a piano tech...). the same used piano dealer had several UX3 (few years newer than YUX, similar construction) at around $5000, also with a "teacher discount". and at least one of them was in a very good condition (I almost bought it, afterall)

the sticker price was near $7000 for UX3.. but got a big discount when I mentioned our piano teacher who referred us to the store.

Even before mentioning the teacher, the store owner kept mentioning that everything is on sale, so if there is a piano I'm interested, to ask for the price since it will be lower than the tag. I think mentioning the teacher got me extra $500 off or so, I think... not sure...

I would ask if there is any space in price negotiation...
