Hi,

After 20 years of only really playing at my parents' house at Christmas parties, I've decided to start practising and playing regularly again! I've pretty much narrowed it down to buying either a Yahama YDP161 or Kawai CN23. I was Grade 8 (although that was a long time ago, so it'll take a bit to get back to it...which I'm determined to do!), so am looking for something suitable within my price range (under £1000). For anyone with any experience of either DP, which would you recommend? I tried out the Yahama and liked it; hoping to try out the Kawai this week. Thanks in advance for any advice!

cass21, in addition to those two models, you may also wish to play-test the Roland RP-301.

In addition, the Kawai CL36 and Roland F-120 are compact versions of the CN23 and RP-301 respectively.

Best of luck with your search, and getting back to grade 8!

Kind regards,
James

Thanks for the quick reply, Kawai James! I'll add the Roland to my search too. Would you say that all 3 are of equal quality and reliability and that the main difference is simply preference in how the DP plays?

cass21,

I'm a little reluctant to make direct comparisons with competitors products, therefore let me just say that Yamaha, Kawai, and Roland all make excellent digital pianos.

Really, quality and reliability are largely the same throughout the different brands - pricing aside, the decision to purchase one piano over another essentially comes down to which instrument you prefer to play the most.

Cheers,
James
