I am going to look at this 46" studio piano tomorrow. The seller is asking $1300, which seems to me quite reasonable, especially in light of the fact that a local dealer told the seller it could fetch between 2100 and 2300 (I'm assuming honesty). It seems to be in very good shape, but obviously, I won't get a good sense until I see it and play it.

I'm hoping there are some folks here who can shed light on this model, which, as I understand it, was made prior to the point that Yamaha started identifying their pianos by model nos. The seller said it is very much like the T's that came along later.

Any ideas on the quality of this instrument and the asking price?

The asking price sounds reasonable to me, if the piano is in good condition (and not necessarily a bargain). Fact is, it's getting on up in age... The dealer estimate was likely retail and not private sale, though a good selling point for the seller.

I played an older Yamaha 46" studio at a church a couple of weeks ago, maybe of a similar age as the one you are looking at, and it played very well and sounded good. It was a tad bright, but that goes with being older, (compacted hammers) and being a Yamaha.

The fact that it is a Yamaha is in your favor... smile

Thanks, Rick. Point taken about how it's getting up there in years; I'll have to look into whether the seller knows how extensively it was played. There are always those cases where an instrument has been sitting untouched for so long it's hardly broken in. I could be lucky...

Interestingly, the seller says the tone is fairly mellow, in contrast to the common Yamaha brightness. I will have to see.

If it's from 1974, it should have a model designation inside. Maybe a P2 or P22...not sure when the change occurred from one to the other, or if there was a model produced in-between those two. Some things to check are: rust on the strings, broken hammer flange spring cords, if it's in tune, if it's at the proper pitch, cracks in the sound board, any strange buzzing on any notes. Good luck!
