So, I'm open to being criticized if this should have been in the June Piano Bar thread. . . I just didn't feel good enough and have no problem if this thread gets pushed down. Here's what happened: Years ago we bought an ePiano and I started up an account here and everything was great. I was learning and having fun and . . . let life push me away from the piano. (Stupid of me: I'm making time for it now, I could have then, as well.) Recently, I've resolved to come back to the keys and, though I'm not what I once was (and that certainly was nothing to write home about) I'm happy that I'm again working on becoming the person I want to be. A big part of my motivation was a blog post titled " How to stop sucking and be awesome" on the codinghorror blog. And a big part of his recipe for self-development was to 'suck in public,' to solicit feedback. And that's what I'm doing here. I'm going to try and post a little something each month--certainly not with so much text--and see if it doesn't help me develop. Here's the part where I welcome criticism. But, bear in mind I've been playing again for less than a month, so keep it constructive. So, without further ado, here I am, performing my June Piano Recital.

Hi Toby, I'm also back from being away for a while, so welcome back to the both of us! I enjoyed listening to your recording. You seem a little hesitant in places but that's probably because your brain needs to catch up with what you're doing -- something I'm pretty sure we all suffer from. But it sounds good nonetheless. Keep up the good work! Did you know there is a monthly "piano bar" thread? That sounds like an excellent place to put your "little" somethings (can hardly call it little at 9 minutes ). There is also the recital every three months, which is another excellent way to make a fool out of yourself in public, ha ha. But seriously, you should consider contributing. We'd love to have you!

Toby, congrats on getting back on the bench! I also dropped out for a while and recently recommitted to piano, but am nowhere near having anything to share publicly — not even in the spirit of "sucking in public," lol! Thanks for sharing your impromptu recital. The third piece (the very short one after the Christmas song) seems to be the most polished, but I like the final piece the best. (I think it's a single piece with several sections, anyway. Starts at about 07:18. What piece is it and who's the composer?) You seem to have a good feel for it and I think it will improve with time. Maybe you should consider that one for the July Piano Bar or August recital.

Seems had work on timing a lot. The dynamic is controlled. I appreciate your technique and don't know how to criticize it. Better ask your serl: Do you like the feel of the playing?
Working on:\
J.S.Bach Prelude in C Min: No. 2 from Six Preludes fur Anfanger auf dem Am Abend No. 2 from Stimmungsbilder, Op. 88 60s Swing No. 1 from Swinging Rhythms

Toby, I really like the final piece as well. What is it? It sounds very familiar, but I can't place it.

Wow, thanks to all you of you. I never expected so many responses.
I'll plan on trying to get a new piece into the Piano Bar threads each month. That seems like a goal I can realistically commit to. I'm nervous about contributing anything to a 'real' recital thread.
There were a couple of requests for me to identify the pieces. So, here goes: 1. Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring from J.S. Bach (this version from sheetmusicdigital.com) 2. O Holy Night from Adolphe Adam, Arranged by William Wallace (also downloaded somewhere for free, it doesn't say on the music where) 3. The Irish Washer Woman, by Jeremiah Dugan from The Great Irish Songbook. 4. The Kerry Dance by J.L Malloy (I didn't realize that I left this snippit in in editing) also from The Great Irish Songbook. 5. Calypso Rhumba, from the Alfred's Adult All-in-One Course. (This is my wife's favorite song from the book) 6. Fandango from the same book. (My favorite of the pieces I can play in this book.)
Weiyan: You said I should ask myself if I like it. And, well, the answer is yes, or I wouldn't be doing it. On the other hand, hearing myself play in a recording is very. . . sobering.
I'd love to play more fluidly (the Bach piece is my favorite piano piece that I can play, but it's so clunky in the recording) and I don't know how to work on that except to practice often. Are there exercises I can do?
When everything works right--Fandango was a hit here--I love how it sounds, but I don't know how to be that smooth in everything I play.
That's my goal. That, and improvising.
Thanks for all the feedback!

Toby, you should like to play more fluidly. Relaxing, allow mistake in your playing.

Weiyan: Are you saying to stop stopping to correct?
I mean, now, if I make a mistake, I feel like I have to 'correct' it before continuing. You're saying to continue and try again next time?

Just let the music flow. Mistake is inevitable. From your music, I know your are perfectionist. http://www.amazon.com/Perfect-Wrong...p;sr=8-1&keywords=perfect+wrong+noteThis book can help to convert wrong notes to music.

Andrew Furmanczyk (Lypur) who has put up a lot of piano tutorial videos, says this about sight reading: Never stop or go back, ever, never...repeats 4-5 times. It's logical, when you go back and try to repeat a part it's obvious to the listener you've made a mistake and you've played the same part again, a little differently the latter time. It'll usually be clear that the part is not supposed to be played twice, it'll not fit in with the rest of the song. When you continue with the rest of the song without corrections of formerly played notes, it's possible the listener will not notice the mistake, except he's a piano teacher or knows the piece well. Here's the video I'm talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEUvHtqFrkI
