Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone has any info an my upright Star piano. It's serial number is 53091 and was manufactured in Richmond, In. I believe it is about 100 years old. Thanks for any info.

Thanks for all the info, but how much is it worth?

Hi Starrpiano,

By way of coincedence, at Cunningham we are currently restoring a collectors piece that happens to be a Starr piano. It was also owned by Shemp Howard (Yes, that Shemp Howard)which is why the current owner is putting money into it.

Starr pianos were in the main lump of OK instruments made at the time. They weren't great and they didn't stink.

Hows that?

Samuel Horwitz (aka Shemp Howard) of the the "Three Stooges". Now, there's a pianist to go back in time to hear !!

Rich, do you suppose that before Shemp bought the piano, it came recommended to him from Larry Fine? \:\)

Seriously, Shemp's piano, huh? Now that would be a conversation piece.

I also need some info on Starr pianos. I found a Starr baby grand for sale that I'm thinking of buying. I had never heard of Starr before though so I'm wondering if it's worth it. It costs 2000 and the serial number is 197407. Thanks!

That Starr was probably made in the late 1920s. It is probably not worth $2000.

You should start a new topic, rather than dredge up old, dead ones.

I am getting a Starr upright this weekend. A friend is giving it away, so it's only costing me the price of the move. It is a beautiful old upright and has a gorgeous tone. My friend paid $500 for it 15 years ago. Hope that helps! smile

That does pretty much sum up their uprights. On the other hand, one of the most innovative small grands I've come across was a Starr. Of course, while the design was fascinating, its construction "wasn't great and ... didn't stink."
