My own tuning mess from A3 to E5. Unisons are a bear.

I may not be fast,

Johnny Costa, the fleet-fingered jazz pianist of "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood" fame. He has the chops similar to Oscar Peterson, but seems to be a touch more lyrical and melodic.

I'm sure Costa is very good (and I always enjoyed the piano in Mr. Rogers), but let's not exaggerate... no one had chops similar to Oscar Peterson (except for Art Tatum).

Catching up on a few things I want to hear from Stage III of the Sydney piano competition (and coincidentally, sipping a nice little Aussie Shiraz while I'm doing it). I haven't heard it yet, but someone played Medtner's op. 22 sonata - kudos to them for having the daring to choose something like that.

Yeah, I knew that statement would get me into trouble. And you are right, Peterson and Tatum are in a class of their own. But I have to admit, once I get beyond Peterson's technical virtuosity, I long for something slightly more lyrical. Costa has that for me--his fast passages don't sound so much like a technical exercise, and he can really bring out the melody. Of course, both Peterson and Costa are deceased, and Costa himself would blush at the thought of being compared to Peterson. Take a spin at some of his music--I think you will like it a lot!

thumb thumb Absolutely! As the records continue to fall, like so much broken china, there is little room for "opinion" on this subject. No less a player than Rocket himself recognized Federer's genius years ago, as have the vast majority of former pros. (Although I don't recall any comparisons with piano playing.)

Well, sorry to interrupt the thread, but Fed's recent triumph deserved a brief yippie, even in this hallowed forum. You may now resume listening.

This is the reason I love a capella choir music more than any other kind of music.

Philip Glass, Tirol Concerto, second movement. Maybe the most beautiful piece he's composed:

Godowsky's passacaglia on Schubert's theme, over and over again. Hamelin's version, to be precise. The last 60 seconds are so grandiose, monumental, epic... like a fight between gods. This is a piece I hope to play in 2-3 years when I will be studying in a conservatory.

I just purchased a new turntable ( http://uturnaudio.com ), and have been "rediscovering" my old records.

Just have been listening to Ilse von Alpenheim's elegant set of the complete Haydn piano concertos.

The U-Turn Orbit turntable is very good for the money, BTW. Shall I become a vinyl snob?
