Tell us about your piano and musical experience!

ABF Survey 2012

It's a Google Docs form, which is probably the easiest and quickest and cheapest way to do a survey of a lot of people. There are more questions than last year - I remembered to ask about gender this time, and I think I included all the suggested questions.

You can see the responses here:

ABF Survey 2012 - responses

We've done this before - here are the responses from last year:

ABF Survey 2011 - responses

And yes, you can answer the survey more than once, but why would you? It's not exactly scientific, but it is a lot of fun...

Enjoy!
Sam

Reading and participating in both 2011 & 2012 polls was the direct reason why i registered. Thank you Sam. I can see by the results i am in good company. I also must appologize. I joined after taking the poll, thus skewing the results a very small bit. Thanks again

Filled one out. Too bad there was no free form type section for feedback/suggestions.

I love ABF and the recitals in particular. But being a newbie I find the recital review thread to be hard to get a good overview of. Your page with recital statistics is a true gold mine. I just wish the recital reviews could be arranged differently to allow the reviews to be grouped by performance as they are on Amazon or IMDB for example. That would be the icing on the cake!

I've often thought that myself! There must be some way to do that. Google docs could probably allow for separate reviews for each performance, but then there wouldn't be the discussion here. I'm sure someone here will figure out a way to do this within a couple years. It can't be too difficult...but it is for me smile

2/3rds of us are male? (at least so far). Don't know why that is so surprising to me, but it is. Maybe the numbers will improve - lets hear from the females!

Thanks for doing this again!!!

The female/male ratio is changing, just now it was 48%/52% (female/male).

I like the new questions. I am sure there are many other questions that could be added, and after a certain point, keeping it short is probably better. But! Having said that, since you asked about playing by ear, maybe next year you could also ask about sightreading ability, and then maybe a question about ability in both areas.

Another interesting question would be how many teachers people have had, or something that assessed how long it took the person to find a compatible teacher.

Also, it might be interesting to hear where people get their sheet music (in score books, digitally by the sheet, free sheets only, purchasing copyrighted sheets etc) And where do people learn about music they might want to play...

Ok, I'll stop! smile The Survey is fantastic as is! smile

Welcome, Farmerjones. smile

These results are interesting. Sometimes I think y'all are so much more experienced than me, but I see there are lots of true beginners around too. A good mix of experience levels.

Thanks for producing this survey, Sam!

It's always neat to see the statistics for the current year, and it'll also be interesting to watch the trends from year to year.

Some of the results really do speak of the diversity here in the ABF! smile

Thanks for the survey. A few minor suggestions:

For the Self Assessment question, I might add a teacher category. Clearly there are teachers active in this section of the forum. Perhaps advanced and expert categories already serve the teachers, but it is a suggestion.

For "Can you play by ear, without the use of music?" This isn't a yes or no question. A few may claim zero ability, but most functional musicians can play or sound out a simple phrase or two if given the key. Intermediates can recognize chords and intervals and duplicate melody lines with some work. Savants may be able to attempt to duplicate complicated arrangements by ear after one listen.

I suggest adding a sight reading question, with answers of varying levels of ability. So perhaps two questions along the lines of: On a scale of 0 to 5 (five is best), How good are you at playing by ear? How good are you at sight reading?

For some questions such as how long do you practice each day, there is a big clump of data. Perhaps break the answers down to more useful data points such as:
15 minutes or less
about 30 minutes
about 60 minutes
about 90 minutes
about 2 hours
3 hours or more

Anyway, these are minor nitpicks. Thanks again for the survey. The survey gives a different picture of the forum than listening to the recital pieces and/or reading the posts.

This question, as well as the ones about improvising and singing, might work better if they are phrased in terms of "Do you", rather than "Can you" -- like this one: "Do you compose music?"

Because if forced to, I can sing and play at the same time. But I hardly ever do, because, well, it just aint pretty!

That's a good point. I used to sing, but people didn't really like it. For some of the questions multiple level answers might be a good idea:
Sightreading
Play music by ear
Sing and play
Compose your own music
Improvise or use fake books (might be better split into two questions)

All those categories are better with a self assessment (0 to 5 or whatever scale), rather than a simple yes or no. If that seems like it is making the survey too long, perhaps heap them all into a multiple choice check off similar to the question about where people perform.

eg: Check all that apply:
I use sheet music
play by ear
improvise
use fake books
compose original music
sing and play at the same time

now three more possible categories if this format is used:
* use guitar tabs or guitar chords
* use Youtube as a source of music
* have taken or will take an exam soon (RCM or equivalent)

Thanks again for this, Sam! I'd like to see how this compares to 2011. So far, the numbers are very close. So close that I bet you 90% of the respondents are the same as last year. ha

My responses in the areas of practice and playing time were vastly different this year.

LOL. I laughed with the question about singing.
Although I can sing little songs while I'm playing, I prefer to do a duet with my daughter (I play, she sings).

My voice is so peculiar, that I'm afraid to turn my piano out of tune just because I'm singing in front of it.
Note: I have a DP...
