Dave, thanks for your time, energy, humor, enthusiasm and passion. I'm just amazed at how you took over two hours of your time to listen, cajole, encourage and teach. I'm pretty much at the starting gate of this journey, and I hope to hear some neat things along the way. Meanwhile, I'll try to keep my finger quiet.

Cus, your illness didn't show in either face or fingers. Thanks for the dreamy quality of your impro-positions.

Time, Great to meet you. I hope to be where you are one day, both with your grasp of the JOI Tunes and the ease of your modal improv.

Ten, your questions, comments, and observations provide needed education and keep my pencil busy. Your candor is quite refreshing.

Knotty, I loved your Mixolydian/Phrygian modal improv. Sorry, if this took time away from postponed your solo master class with Dave, but it was great bearing witness to your talents.

good stuff all.

Cus, I'm glad you got that new metronome. Now time to learn how to use it smile
TF, Good to meet you. I hope you enjoyed it.

Don't worry about the delayed lesson. Gave me time for a pretty nice hike, and now off to the pool. Lesson should be fun.

Hello Dave and Knotty
Today I improvised short lines for the C maj 3 scale progression
(C maj 7, C7, F maj 7, F min 6, C maj 7, C maj 7).

If you think this one is OK, I plan to improvise long lines tomorrow.

http://www.box.net/shared/t6t6n6mr9ar2bf64p356

Thanks for listening.

Dave, thanks for "I can't believe that You're in Love with Me" for illustrating this progression. I listened to it on you-tube and Lester Young is awesome.

Best regards
cus

Cheers
cus

Thanks 10 and Time. It's becoming a bit more natural to me now.
I know that I am still sometimes slightly out on landing my LH chord exactly on Beat 1 but at least now with my new metronome, I can begin working at it.

It looks like the descending jazz hanon in #5 is not a mirror image. Since I'm easily confused, I'm going to do a mirror image version so I stay consistent with the other ones I've worked on.

Cus,
That was really good. You are going to do this in 6 keys for now?
Keep doing it just like that. As you get more confortable, you can make the lines longer, and eventually, be able to make your lines go over any bar.
Meaning having lines that cross the F- to Cmaj bar line, or C7 over Fmaj, etc...

Hi everyone
We had so much fun with Dave on Sunday. As you know, Dave is one of the hottest and most generous exponents of jazz education around the world. Here are the audio files for your benefit. I will cross-post this in the Adult Beginners Section. Enjoy !

a) Jazz harmonic improv: C maj, using 3 scales

http://db.tt/ET67Sbo

b) Jazz harmonic improv: C maj, using 1 scale

http://db.tt/MAnQFvJ

c) JOI Lesson 1

http://db.tt/UbTIyxo

Time Flies: please accept my apologies. Your mic didn't do justice to your great playing so I didn't record your section.

And now..... for the Pièce de résistance....the masterclass on modal improv.

d) LH drone and Mixolydian example

http://db.tt/dj3n2Nn

e) Phrygian example

Hi Knots
Thank you for your feedback. I will try long lines tonight. If you like my long lines, then I will try in 6 keys.

Improv update: I realised yesterday that a big barrier for me has been lack of uninterrupted practice time. I had just set myself the goal of 5 minutes improvising in C, when someone came in the room, asked me a question.... Kids back at school tomorrow and I'm hoping to have some dedicated time.

Thing is, I can do the tunes between interruptions. I can do the scat singing while cooking.

Also, my hand seems better and I'll start back on the hanons soon. OK, I tempted fate. See what happens next...

I have a question, now that I've started on singing with Charlie Parker. Can't say I've been looking forward to this - I find him difficult and not very musical. I've started on the solo for Moose. Just wondering if I should be doing the head instead/as well as that. The head is quite a challenge in itself. What do y'all think?

Charlie is very clever. You will hear when you get onto his A sections, how he varies each one.

And when you get onto Perhaps, you will hear that it is very melodic !

What helped me was listening to Dave's Charlie Parker masterclass on u-stream, study this at least once.

You will enjoy your singing of Bird so much more.

10,
I agree that Bird isn't easy to get into. But it's worth it. There's nothing like it.
If you try playing some of the lines, along with basic chords in the LH, you will hear lots of new things.

I'm very fortunate - I've got lots of time to spend with JOI, and I'm having a great time!

Here's lesson #5.
(I'm pretty comfortable with the solo pattern transpositions with lesson #3 and am working on the solo pattern in lesson #4. Doing the other things too. Started lesson #6).

Sugar Blues (watch out for the metronome)
Sweet And Low
...and a special treat - vocals!
I was pretty Satchmoe'd out (probably due to the poor audio) so I jumped ahead a little to Lester Young.
Fooling Myself They don't write songs like this anymore frown Sigh - I miss the old days.

It's one thing to play solely for myself, and quite another to play while being recorded or listened to. The latter is a tad more... stimulating. So, here's my first contribution. My hands weren't entirely quiet or accurate, but I'm getting there. And in time the neurons will connect!
