Hello everyone!

I am a music grad student and my research class has asked me to pick a musical artifact and do historical research on it. I chose my piano that my dad gifted me about a year and a half ago. He bought the piano at an auction for $25 and we spent money having it restored. It makes a great sound!

Here's the info I do know. It's a Haines Brothers piano and the number on the inside is 27536. Also when my piano guy was working on it we found the year 1887 written on the back in piano.

I'm looking for any books, resources, places, or anywhere I can go for information about this company and their pianos. I did find a downloadable PDF online from the company, but I'm going to need much more! And im not sure where to begin. Thank you for your help!

Hi GradStudent, welcome to the forum. smile

Haines Brothers was established in 1851 by Napoleon J. Haines and his brother Francis W. Haines in New York, at 116 3rd Avenue, New York City, NY. Their first upright piano was made in 1870. Manufactured by Winter & Company, NY, about 1898. Around 1906, Haines Bros. was absorbed by the American Piano Company and the pianos were then made under the control of Foster-Armstrong, E. Rochester, NY. By 1924 the pianos were made in Canada by Sherlock-Manning who took over production until 1945.

Haines Brothers' first published piano serial number was in 1855, with s/n 980. Your piano's s/n of 27536 would fall in between 1885 - 1889. Serial no.'s for 1885 start with no. 24000, the next published s/n is 28000 in 1890.

This information is from Pierce's Piano Atlas. Please pm me with your address & I'll be happy to send you the volume, etc., information.

I hope you get an "A"!

Some better researched information might in The Piano in America, 1890-1940 by Roell, Daniel Spillane's book, and Alfred Dolge's. See if you can get them through your library.

Thank you! I found two of the books you suggested and they are giving me great background on the Haines Brothers!

Thanks for this info as well! I think I have found a copy of the altas in the reference stacks at my local public library, so I am going to check it out this weekend and hope to use it as a source for my paper as well!
