Hi Norm, wow - that's progress! lesson 3! laugh I like that occasional growl in your voice. I didn't notice flat notes, but i really don't think it matters as it's not singing lessons, it's more an aural exercise. You did stay in key unaccompanied.

Thanks for listening.

Cus, you're playing ahead of the beat a little, so you just need to relax. But that's a good challenge tempo.

I can never keep up with the changes you make to your band. So you now have a new sax player and a new bass player for Mon night ?

My favourite was Blue Bossa.
I really liked your grace notes and your very melodic solo, you used your arps and scales so nicely and creatively.
When you traded 4s, you listened to the horn very well and your improv was a response to his.
I also liked your swing feeling.

My next favourite was Tenor Madness.
I'm pleased your band likes Sonny Rollins. I loved the blues in your solo. It seemed like you did abandon your trademark behind-the-beat style in this uptempo one. But when you played Solar uptempo, I don't recall you rushing.

Hi Knots and 10
Thanks for your kind congratulations. I couldn't have reached this stage without Dave's unique JOI methodology and Knots' support and guidance. And it's extra fun knowing people around the world are swingin' to JOI too.

Thanks Cus!
Yes, it's a new bass player and new Sax player. I think this band is pretty good for now. Everyone's very reasonable. It's a good band.

>> Knotty -- thanks for last evening's soundtrack. You swing. You really swing. And I think I may have heard a few Tristano -style mantras.
Thanks Norm, I'm glad you liked it. I'm curious where you heard the Tristano stuff. I probably did that through Dave without realizing.

>>So here's my latest contribution: The timing is off in a spot or two, my voice went flat, but I'm here with some Blue Prints
That sounded really good. You're a far-better-than-average singer. Certainly much better than me.

Many thanks 10 and Knots for lending your great ears to, and giving me constructive comments for my Hanons.
Yeah I have a couple of problems.
1. I tend to have trouble starting right.
2. Inconsistency. The Hanon before this one 10 said I wasn't keeping up with the met, this time Knots said I'm ahead of the met.

I will go onto the next Hanon as I spent over a month on the last one.

Yes I agree that it's very difficult to increase the challenge tempo for each harder Hanon.
Compounding this, the met tempo increases don't seem to be linear either e.g. 3 bpm, 4 bpm, 6 bpm, 8 bpm.

I like your current Mon night band too. I agree it's a good idea to keep this combo for the time being.

i'm interested to hear what your sustain tempo sounds like. Do you start with your fingers on the keys (covering them)? Do you hear/imagine a bar before you play?

Good question 10.
Now I'm not sure what my sustain tempo is. I had always thought the sustain tempo was the met speed below one's challenge tempo.
But after the comments from yourself and Knotty, I might have to revise my sustain tempo downwards.

Thanks for those good ideas.
No I don't start with my fingers above the starting pattern.
I don't think I imagine too much either.

I felt that mantra thing happening in the Blue Bossa Nova around 2:26 to 2:40.

Thanks to post-nasal drip and a sore throat, my jowls were alive with the sound of mucus.

Thanks for your comments and encouragement. Now I'm jumping and jumping and jumping into a Froggy Day. And this might take... a while. In the meantime, I'll keep singing and swinging.

I start at 80. That's an exercise in control.

Recently I've been doing hanon 1 in the minor keys at around 80. What I realise is that the value is as much in the aural work as the fingers.

If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing slowly. smile

I'm curious to know what your hanon's sound like at 116. In other words, at what point is it relaxed, consistent, and in control?

Okay folks, I don't own the book JOI but I've bought a couple of Dave's albums and I've watched all his master classes, so if nobody minds I'm gonna interpret this as the 'Dave' thread and post a little of what I've learned from the jazzmonster of New York. (Followers of Dave's stuff will notice one or two shameless thefts, er, quotes, from his compositions).

I guess I'm posting to share my progress. It was a very quick take; I only had a half hour to do it, so there are some rough spots. I've been wanting to do a serious recording but then thought, well, either I'm never going to get around to it, or I'll do a super quick one; oh well.

For some reason after I press the 'record' button my mind goes blank; I'm sure others are familiar with that. I started to relax a tiny bit toward the end, though.

Swingin' begins at 00:35.

Charles,
That stuff sounded good. Nice job keeping up the walking bass line.

Hi Charles, thanks for sharing this here. I liked the way the improvisation dipped in and out of the melody.

ten and knotty,

Thanks for your words and for taking a listen. After many hours of practice it's nice to play for somebody other than my neighbors smirk It took me forever to get my LH on 'autopilot' as DF says.

Charles,

Are you taking lessons with Dave or just followed his masterclass?
Either way it's nice work. I know what you mean by many hours. It's cool that you can do the tune in any key.

I'm not taking lessons from Dave (yet). I'm interested in doing that and might take one lesson from him soon, but haven't thought about the long run.

Thanks a lot. The work in all keys has become very important to me. I go through the keys systematically, adding one sharp or flat at a time (or by half steps or whatever steps), half the time not at the piano but playing mentally -- in bed, in the bathtub, when making dinner. It's become an obsession. crazy

Charles,
Thanks greatly for your music. Cool, efficient, economical, restrained, not an ounce of fat on that tune. It reminded me a bit of Miles in style and temperament. Thanks again.
