Cool Charles, that was very entertaining. It can't have been easy.
What a great way to learn a song using the walking bass and the 12 key method.

Yeah Dave's masterclasses are pretty addictive. I'm busting to find out what the dress code is for the Liberace one.

Norman,

Wow, thank you very much for your post. smile smile smile I can't say how happy it makes me. I also like the way you describe my style. I had never thought about it that way.

Cus,

Thanks! No, it wasn't easy, but it was fun smile (I too am looking forward to Dave's class on Liberace.)

Okay, since some folks liked that one, here's just one more (I won't hijack the thread with Autumn Leaves in all twelve keys.) This one's in F minor and it's more of a 'blustery day' kind of Autumn Leaves. Technically, I like this one more, but it's less complete and it's also lacking almost all of the wistfulness that is really nice about the actual song. The brief intro thing is also actually planned on this one, where as the first one was improvised. One thing I want to work on is not so frequently hitting the root of the chord on the downbeat on the LH.

Autumn Leaves F minor

I can get a bit like that with the keys thing, only with much simpler tasks. It's particularly irritating for my husband.

- You're doing this again? You could play it yesterday.
- Yesterday I played it in A. Today's Ab.

It's since I worked out Transcribe could play if for me in any key.

Ditto on the masterclasses, I found since I started watching them my singing with solos has got neglected.

Hi Charles
Like Knotty, I liked this 2nd one better too. Nice groove, nice movement in both hands and I liked the couple of instances where your RH went into the upper register.

Many thanks knotty and cus. smile I guess the 'blustery' autumn leaves works in some way or another, after all, actually.

Charles - you really have found your own voice! smile

I have a few things to share.

Send in the clones from lesson 22. This I found totally impossible to sing and so deleted my aborted attempt to do so. I'd like to hear *anyone* sing this.

Some improvising from a few days ago ii V i in a random minor key; then random major.

http://www.box.net/shared/t9n80983l4aumkycavpe

I'm not really happy with how my phrases end. I know that's the point. It's just much easier to mis-hit than to hit.

And finally for tonight, I did a good old-fashioned rh composition based on Turvy, lesson 7. Obviously I'm not playing it well, I'm just interested in comments as I did a few things differently from before. As custard pointed out, it's minor and I've been focussing on minors, so that made it interesting to do.

Meanwhile i have been working on the bass line for the same number.

tia for any comments, suggestions.

hi Laura:) Everything sounding good. With the improv, you can imagine for the moment that your line is an anchor and it should hit the sea floor on a downbeat. This intention will help it to find the completion that the line needs at the end. Up-beat endings are cool, but the intentional downbeat ending will help you right now. The line was real good, I dug the harmonic minor scale, everything fine.

Blessings and keep swingin'

DF

Intention to end on the downbeat. Got it. I knew that somewhere.

I'm sure.

Now's the time for a last recording.

Hi Laura
Well done on playing Lesson 22. I think even Sarah Vaughan in her youth with her dexterous voice would have enjoyed the challenge of singing that one. Seems like you're well on track to finishing Book 1 by Christmas which is a great achievement.

I found Now's the Time one of the funnest of the Bird songs. You've reminded me of how cool his ascending arps were, they were always placed in just the right place and further lifted the dynamics of the song.

That would be a just dessert for having written it in the first place. smile

Thanks custard. It should be doable to finish book one by the end of the year. That feels like a milestone. I'll be glad to have done the Charlie Parker solos. smile There was one phrase in Now's the Time that I just completely gave up on.

I worked a little on dropping my anchor on downbeats today and I think it was working.

The easiest is to get an account on box.net
It's free.
Then you can easily upload any MP3
After that, you choose "share" and that gives you a magic link. Don't use the link from the URL bar, that won't work.

Ditto !

The Zoom produces either a WAV or a mp3 file which you can directly upload onto boxnet.

btw Knotty
Your mommy sounds very cool to travel into NYC with you and sit through your piano lesson and to put up with your band practice wink Does she like your Mon night or end of week band better ?

Dave,

I thought you had a fancy tiny recording device?

If not, there's gotta be a way to record via your webcam / mic. Youtube has an option to record live and post automatically. You might want a separate channel than your high end one with all the masterclasses.

I recorded you with the iphone, and while not awesome, it still is enough to get the point.

The whole family has completely given up, and they simply sleep through it. The boys were all born with it, so they're ok. But trust me, when we have trombone + tenor in here, it gets LOUD.

Can someone confirm for me please is it Miles Davis that plays after Charlie Parker in Embraceable You? It sounds like him but I don't have any info on the mp3 beyond 'various artists'.
