hey everybody,

Today I was rather excited as I was able to see my prospective piano. In the Ad it said it was in great condition and the pictures looked pretty good, but when I saw the piano there was cracking to the finish. I thought to myself okay it looks sorta beat up, but I will try it out. I was pleasantly surprised, as long as i stayed in a certain range it sounded pretty good. I played a couple pieces and they sounded alright but not what Mason and Hamlin has been hyped up to be. I was a bit disappointed until I played "une priere de une vierge" it sounded very good. Except for up very high, where under inspection i found that the felts were almost gone. So i thought to myself i could probably buy this piano for $3750 CAN. I was wondering what it would cost to rework the action put on new felts new strings and possibly do a case refinish?

Thanks
Matt,

Also find out if the pinblock, soundboard and bridges need to be replaced.

There are many upon many recent threads on restoration of vintage Mason & Hamlin grands. If you do a major search in this forum alone you will be very well imformed. Many of the pros can address the indepth questions you may still have. Don't worry! they'll be persons here putting in their 2 cents anyway but one could get a jump on invaluble info here already. Good luck!

It's possible that a new set of hammers would upgrade the piano to the level that you desire.
