Hi -

I was at a concert the other day, and I noticed that the pianists were using some type of black board underneath their music. The board was placed on top of the piano to hold the music. It seemed as if they were putting it on the piano's music holder to sort of supplement it. I often work with single sheets of paper, and something like this would be a great help to me as the sheets are always bending and don't sit well on the music stand on my piano.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might buy something like this, or as to what it is called? I suppose I could make something myself, but I'm also kind of curious if this is a common thing that people use.

I'm in the NYC area, in case anyone has a recommendation as to a store.

Might have been devised by the player. I've seen a large piece of clear plexiglass on a music desk.

Thanks. Yeah, maybe I'll just make something. It would need to be soft so as not to damage the finish I suppose.

Wow. Thanks. That looks like it will work well for what I need. I think the one they were using at the concert was taller. It looked close to 2 feet high. I don't think I'll need one that's that high though. The one in the link looks pretty good to me.

Pianists who are in the "new music" scene will often use foam board or gator board.

Thanks for the response. These seem like good alternatives. One difference between the adapt-a-stand and using foam board or gator board would be that the adapt-a-stand would come in an "L" shape, whereas the boards would come flat. I suppose you could make an "L" shape if you wanted to, though, maybe with glue, tape, or staples/pushpins/tacks.
