Ok, I'm aware that neither supply house carries this tool, so where/what do I use to make my life easier... I've had two of them this week alone, one is an elbow job.... Please advise

I always just lift them up out of the slot and turn them by hand.

That works until you get blisters on your fingers.

The tool comes in and out of stock.

If someone gets blisters after only 88 keys, then they need to seriously reconsider their choice as a piano technician. :-) If I were doing hundreds of them, then yes I may try to find a tool. I only encounter a couple a month here in my area, and most turn very easily by hand once they are lifted up out of their resting slot.

Since your not willing to wear your wife's gardening gloves, long nose vise grips and shank knurling pliers both work.

I have a hammershank tapering tool that fits my universal handle. I spread the tips slightly and they straddle the wood button and turn it nicely. No blisters, no fuss.

I hope that helps.

The hammershank tool sounds good, but I'll continue to do the finger (blister) thing.

You could just make a tool like the ones that are sold. All it takes is a rod and a hacksaw to make the business end.
