I have abandoned the idea of moving my Yamaha DP from classroom to classroom, and am hoping to get a portable keyboard instead.

I am the speech-language pathologist at a school for kids with autism and I sometimes do music groups with the kids. I play pretty poorly, and the kids are not to musically sophisticated, so this instrument doesn't have to be the latest and greatest.

I want full sized keys and I don't really even know what the other parameters are.

I'll be applying for a grant from a local organization, so the less I ask for, the better the chance of getting it.

I welcome suggestions and advice.
Thanks.

Just something basic like a 61 key springy action keyboard? Those are fairly cheap and light weight. I saw one at Fry's last night. It would probably help if you had some dimensions in mind though for the other posters. (Wait, you have almost 500 posts here already ...)

I dunno about dimensions. Normally I play a normal acoustic piano (poorly, as I have mentioned), but my accompaniments with the kids are really really really simple. For example, this Itsy Bitsy Spider is one of the most complicated things I'd ever use: http://makingmusicfun.net/htm/f_printit_free_printable_sheet_music/itsy_bitsy_spider_piano.htm

And then I play it a couple octaves lower and we sing the Great Big Spider, and a couple octaves higher and we sing the Itsiest Bitsiest Spider.

So I want enough range to make that kind of difference obvious, but maybe I don't need the whole 88 keys for that.

Durable would be good.
I don't really know what else to look for or to avoid.

Hi Malkin,
You may want to have a look at the Yamaha NP30/31 (Piaggiero) portable keyboard.
Hope that helps.

Hey, thanks!
I'm all over the Piaggero.
They're cheap enough that if I don't get my grant, I'll probably just pay for it myself.
