Hi. I'm considering purchasing a 1961 Chickering console piano. I like the way it sounds, the touch is okay, and the case is in good condition. It comes with a matching duet bench. I understand that at one time Chickering pianos were among the best made in the U.S. However, at some point, that stopped being true. The question is: when?

I'm looking for a piano that will last for a good 30 years with regular tunings and some work here and there. And I can't really afford to buy a new piano that is of good quality. So I'm looking for a high quality used piano in my price range ~ $2,200.

Could this 1961 Chickering console be the one for me?

This would be a question for the pros here, but I'm thinking the Aeolian piano company bought out several older, well respected American piano companies along about that time, with Chickering being among them.

I have also read that some of the pianos made by Aeolian were not all that bad either... it depends on who you ask, I suppose.

You say you like the Chickering console... that in itself may be a reason to buy it.

As far as how good a quality instrument it is and how long it will last, I'm not sure.

It was made in East Rochester, NY. They were better than the similar pianos made in Memphis, but the consoles were still only mediocre pianos at best. In your price range, I would look for a studio upright, about 45 inches tall. They would give you a better chance of longevity.

My concern is that most 50 year old consoles won't last another 30 years. The Chickering was a good one, but I would look for something newer. Your budget should be adequate.

+1 to Steve. There are plenty of used pianos available in your price range that are ~ 20 yrs old.
