YAY. Can't believe that I stumbled across a recording of this! Never knew she performed this piece before. What do you think of the recording? laugh

I didn't realize that (as indicated by the photo) Martha and Franz were about the same age! ha

That performance surfaced several years ago, certainly delighting other 'argerichfans'. She most definitely has the 'spirit' of the piece, and probably plays it as well as could be played, though really miles away from Schnabel's dictum: 'Great music is better than can be played', or something like that.

IMO, I have always found Totentanz to be rather tedious in places, and not something I would wish to hear on a regular basis. Liszt at his most savage and uncompromising, yet the over-the-top screech doesn't wear well. The ending feels rather perfunctory.

Around the same time, Argerich played this -and the two concertos- in Berlin. An older friend of mine happened to have been there, and he told me that she was not in good health and made many mistakes.

I was sorry for that, as I have always hoped that there would be a recording of Argerich playing the Liszt A major. (Others may know better, but weren't possible recordings scraped because of her ill health?)
