I just purchased a new M & M BB about a month ago and discovered a major buzz. I noticed it pretty early on, but figured my RPT would find it when I got it tuned. The buzz is on Eb3-E3-F3.

My question is about the procedure that my tech did to amplify the buzz in order to hear it better. He added mass to the sound board by clamping a small pair of vice grips to one of the ribs where he thought the sound was coming from. The result was profound, the buzz amplified 10 fold - it was quite amazing. We also found a spot on the soundboard where you could push up with your hand to pretty much eliminate the buzz.

He explained how this extra mass procedure worked, but I forgot how it works. I'm wondering if anyone has seen this done and how it works.

He also put a camera device under the harp to search for an object, but found nothing.

Ultimately the dealer will have to address the problem. Oh yeah, if got several strings in the upper two octaves with false beats.

i had a buzz on my new M&H A; after much troubleshooting it was found to be from the felt pad in front of the aliquot of a particular note. a little leather pad under the 3 strings pressed the buzz out of the felt. not particularly elegant, but it worked.

good luck; gremlins are hard to catch.

The buzz on Mason & Hamlin is that they make a great piano.

[Sorry, I couldn't resist!]

Other than that, how do you like it? New pianos almost always have something or other that has to be adjusted.

Aaron,

We had met at Kassman. I would be curious to know what the cause turns our to be. Our piano also gets an occasional buzz somewhere in that region, but it has only happened on a couple of days so far.

I remember when I was shopping (at R.Kassman) that I heard a buzz on one or two notes (high notes.). Neither Russell nor a friend with me heard it, but on of Russell's co-workers did. It ended up being something else in the room. Someone there called it a "sympathetic ....". (Sorry- I cannot remember the rest.). Maybe that is what you have happening also.

I think you're looking for "sympathetic resonance". It can be wonderful when other strings in the piano itself resonate in this way but less so when picture frames or spoons in the kitchen do it.

If you drink a whole bunch of alcohol, then you won't know if it is the piano or you that is buzzed. Sorry I couldn't help it either.

Buzzes are one of the hardest things to locate. Sometimes we will take a second technician along with us. One to hear and one to look. and that is the latest buzzzzzz...
