I receive an email today from Adam's mom:

Adam is very particular with his song's selection. If he doesn't like it, he lacks of motivation & has a mental block that he does not like the song and he can't play it, it's too difficult for him. I am trying to change his attitude because it applied to everything he does, not just piano.

Questions:
What you do with this kind of students?

My current solution:
Have Adam pick the songs that he likes and we will learn it. I currently having a lot of popular books in my library, I will ask him to pick from there. We will do it his way 50% of the lesson time. Another 50% I will put him at his current Piano Adventure Level 3A book. I am thinking to have a talk with him saying that piano lessons consist of two section. He can decide what to do for 50% of the time and *I* will decide what to do for another 50% of the time. Do you think this is a good idea? Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks!!

Well, the question I have is ...

How is it going with the pieces he is picking ?

If he works hard on them and is becoming a better pianist, what's the harm ?

Oh, I know ... there might be things he isn't experiencing.

So, what ?

Why not let him enjoy playing ?

Unless you are trying to make him a concert pianist.

No, there is no harm. I am happy to let him decide.

No, I am not trying to make him a concert pianist.

I am debating if I should let him decide 100% of the time so that he enjoy what he plays or make it 50/50 so that our lesson actually has some "structure". What you think?

Maybe you guys could have dessert during his lesson. I'll bet Adam would like that.

Out of curiosity, how was this kid ALLOWED to become so particular about the pieces on which he works? From where did his authority arise?

Ha, yes, I think eating desert is a good idea! I am sure Adam will like that, but not Adam's mom.

I would leave it up to him and/or his parents.

If I felt that he needs to work on a particular skill I would suggest a piece that would help him with that.

If he and/or his parents agree, fine. Otherwise, I would make a note of my suggestion (declined by them/him) and move on.

This problem may very well disappear with time.

In the meantime, I would not struggle with it as long as he is making progress and seems to enjoy it.

How old is Adam?

When did he gain charge of his musical education?
What other aspects of his life does he control? His food? His sleep? His school subjects?

Is he employed or self sufficient? If he is not self sufficient or gainfully employed, he will need to submit to the wishes of others.
Sorry. Too bad; so sad. That's just the way it is.
Adam may as well get used to it now.

Seriously!! Mom, Dad: Get a backbone!

If Adam is in Piano Adventures 3A and still has problems like the ones you described, then it's time to shift modes. That is, time to have "fun" lessons and not go past 3A. Adam has probably maxxed out.

That's not the end of the world. I've had students who maxxed out at 2A.

Now, try to teach students like this, and have parents who insist on having their kid take CM. Ha! And skip three levels.

Yes, good thing is that Adam's mom does not enroll him in any test program. Adam is 5th grade now, has piano lesson 4 years with another teacher and I have been teaching him for 10 months. He took whole summer off and now is struggling to get back to routine of piano practice.

Join the club. Students like this are more common than you think. At least he's still taking lessons.

It's a mindset issue. http://mindsetonline.com/changeyourmindset/firststeps/index.html

I would help with not allowing negative self talk and finding phrases for him to use to work through his block.

This piece is too hard, I can't want to do it.

to

This piece is too hard right now, but what do I know about it? Can I do part of it? What is the first part that is a challenge?

You should search interview experience for your teacher position in internet. You also find teacher technical interview questions and answer them, you can ref some questions below:

Tell me about yourself?
Why did you leave your last job?
What are your career goals for teacher?
What is your greatest weakness for Teacher?
How do you evaluate the success of your teaching?
Tell me about a teacher who has inspired you and what did you learn from him or her?
Tell me about the materials you use in the classroom to support your teaching?
What do you consider to be the physical appearance of an ideal classroom?
How do you plan when starting a new study unit or topic with your class?
Tell me how you develop your daily lesson plan and what do you include?

Gee, are you guys psychic or has that been happening and I just missed it? Do you suppose they are related to Carly Simon and James Taylor?

As to the OP, I would have a hard time with a kid dictating how I should teach. But I do like the idea of dessert during lesson time, so I may have to reconsider.

Referring to the original post:

I think the sad part is that it's an email from his mother. But that's life, I guess.

Do you really mean "decide what to do", or do you mean "choose the pieces"?

I don't see so much wrong with children choosing which music to play, as long as they are held to just as high a performance standard while they do it, and as long as they expect to be directed to choose something else if they don't or can't do a good job of their first choice.
