What is the difference in the key action between the EP3 and the FP4? Which one is lighter, more realistic, and which feels better?

I'm looking to buy my first piano to start practicing on and ultimately want to become very good with classical so I want a piano that can help me grow the most. Key action seems to be the most important thing for practice to me. Currently I'm considering these two but I havn't had the chance to play them yet. I may consider a higher end piano if it is needed to help develop my touch and musicalness better. Any advice is appreciated.

I have never tried it but the FP-4 (not FP-4F) action is generally panned around here while the Kawai is usually considered okay.

I would say the EP3's 'AHA IV' keyboard action offers a more realistic playing experience than the FP-4's 'PHAII alpha' action. However, I would add that both instruments are older models, utilise older sound/keyboard technology.

Something like the ES7 or FP-7F would offer a much better package, although it obviously depends on how much you're willing to spend on your first piano.

Best of luck either way!

Cheers,
James

What is the difference between the EP3 and the ES7 key action? Is there any significant difference to consider for a beginner developing their ability on it?

The EP3 and ES7 keyboard actions are very different in mechanism, structure, and design.

In terms of features, the ES7 keyboard action offers the following:

- 3-sensor key detection (improved responsiveness)
- Ivory Touch key surfaces (aid control, nicer look/feel)
- Let-off simulation (greater touch realism when playing pianissimo)

For an absolute beginner, benefits of the ES7's keyboard action benefits may not be fully appreciated.

Kind regards,
James

@zyphonik,

I believe you would find the EP3 to be perfectly satisfactory as I play a lot of different pieces on one (that I recently purchased); everything from classical pieces to more popular stuff, and, even ragtime. The action is quite responsive and the piano sounds are very good, especially through the built-in speakers.

Also, it is currently about one-half the price of the ES7.
