I'd like to hear from the jazz pianists who read this blog about the moment they feel that they achieved a consistency in their playing. My playing ranges from clarity to "why do I keep trying.

How did you make that move from borrowing licks, scales, target notes, approach notes, etc. to a cohesive style that you feel is consistent and you now are just refining it?

Seriously though I don't think it really happens in a moment, rather you play sometime and something clicks and everything falls into place for a few minutes. Then you can spend a year trying to get that back again. Gradually over time the feeling of being 'in the zone' can happen more often and for longer periods, but it is still easy to lose. That is my experience anyway.
My feeling is in this day and age having just 1 cohesive style isn't really enough, we should play in many styles.
