Thanks Ttigg and Undone. I thought about rerecording to slow down etc. but I won't.

Bourlesq is a massive change of pace lol. I was trying to read the music and think I understand it as this:

Play part 1 (forte), repeat part 1 (piano) with a ritardando at the end, Play part 2 (forte), play Part 1 one last time (no loudness indication).

Is this correct?

Thanks

W

Pianonoobalexman plays the ritardando the third time (at the end).

I would REALLY appreciate some help regarding this... anyone?

Sorry Waltz, I meant to take a look at the music for this when I went home last night, but I was so preoccupied with working on my recital piece that I completely forgot.

Thanks, that's all right. I think I'll copy what alexman did in his video. It sort of makes more sense that way. I've already "learned" the piece but my error frequency is THROUGH THE ROOF with the left hand. It's hard. . .

Waltz – Okay, I’m home again, and managed to remember this time. After looking back on the piece, I can better understand your question. Now I can’t give you any hard and fast rules to follow when it comes to reading this sort of music. In fact, what I wound up doing was “cheating” and listening to the recording on the CD that I got with Book 2 and then following that lead.

The piece has two parts; A – comprising the first five mesures and B – which includes the last six measures (not all full measures). The CD and I played A-A-B-A with the ritardando only being applied to the final A part. So the piece keeps its allegro tempo right through to the very end then slows for the finish.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you on this. You’ve probably already moved on to the next piece by now. smile

Thanks Undone. I'm still on it, so I'm glad you got back to me. I'll hopefully be done with it soon but the LH is very challenging.

Finally got to the point to where I am going to move on from Alexander's Ragtime Band. It's been three weeks, I know, but job search activities, combined with working on my recital piece, have meant ARB has not had my full attention. I've had a love / hate relationship with the piece. First, I hated it, because it just seemed so unnatural. Then, when it started to come together, I got to the point to where I considered it sort of fun. Lately, I have had some difficulty "perfecting" it, and I am now frustrated with it. I have a shaky recording on the piano right now, haven't downloaded it to the computer yet. If I do, I may post it, but really, it's not that good, so I may not.

Anyway, time for me to move on to the Joplin piece. The name escapes me at the moment, but curiously, it does not seem to be ragtime.

Ah, that's right, theme from solace.

Alexander's Ragtime Band, as good as it is going to get.

That was great. Seriously, fabulous job. Even Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt would be forced to agree

My performance of Bourlesq:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b--fBFMUXUU

It was NOT good, and I am absolutely not being modest in saying so. Out of the 200-400 or so times I've attempted this piece only two times did I play through it well. Unfortunately I wasn't recording then. As frustrating as it is to play, I love the LH technique learned; even though ostensibly the new item is sixteenth notes, the LH is the more difficult new technique (at least for me).

Regardless I'm moving on to "Arkansas Traveler". This one is much easier and thus I will be spending time concurrently improving my skills at Bourlesq. I may make a second recording to replace that and will post it if I do.

Hope everyone is well,

W

Thanks, Waltz!

I haven't begun Theme from Solace (focusing on my ABF Recital piece, which I just submitted), and I will be out all next week at training for my new (thankfully) job. Maybe one year for Alfred's Book 2 might not be enough, at this pace.

AWTPP – Fine job on Alexander’s! I went through the same “love – hate” relationship with it that you describe. I still think it’s right up there as one of the high points in Alfred’s Book 2. You did a great job on it!

Waltz – I’m not able to get to your recording of Bourlesq. The link is just brining me to some standard “Broadcast Yourself” YouTube page.

Well guys (and gals) I finally managed to get some sort of recording put together for the current recital. It’s still far from perfect and includes several obvious blunders. I knew I wouldn’t have the opportunity to go through the whole recording and transfer process during the upcoming week, so I’m just glad I managed to get something in.

I have two Alfred’s pieces in the queue that I’ve been giving only a passing nod to during each day’s practice recently. Now that the recital recording is over with I should be able to wrap these up quickly and move on to the final two pieces in the book (both of which look like they will take a little time for me to finish).

TTigg – I see that you got your recital piece in and I look forward to listening to it.

Waltz – Are you planning on submitting something? If not, you should – you certainly have the chops for it! Just keep it simple; you want to leave yourself plenty of room to show improvement in future recitals. smile

I made a new recording this morning and deleted that one, sorry about the confusion. Here is the new recording and link:
