I have in my library a bunch of stuff to which I no longer refer, and with very little chance of needing to again in the future. It would please me to see these items in the hands of those who might be able to use them.

Binding is intact, cover a little ragged, all pages and photos seem perfect.

= TOSCANINI – AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT by Samuel Chotzinoff = Hardcover – pub. Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1956. It starts with some reported trouble between the then young Maestro and the Facist Party at La Scala. It ends with the final, faltering beats, and the baton falling from his lifeless right hand during the final concert. In very nice condition.

= VIRGIL THOMPSON by Virgil Thompson = Hardcover, pub. Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1966. Obviously an autobiography of the great American composer. This volume spent part of its life as a lending-library book, and has a spine that needs REglueing to prove it. Otherwise, complete and in nice condition.

Here are three different volumes, bound as one: There is an extensive treatment of the science of SOUND, then the comprehensive teaching of theory and harmony, and finally the instruction in the principles of music composition. Copland’s philosophy pf music, creativity, and life. “A civilization that produces no creative artists is either wholly provincial or wholly dead!” Great, easy reading. A little underlining here and there. Everything legible.

This is the paperback version of THE dictionary of music used by most conservatories through the 1960s and 1970s (Maybe still is, I don’t know!). Shows some age, all pages are intact and fine.

= IL TROVATORE by Giuseppe Verdi = Paperback - Complete Libretto - This is the booklet that came with the better opera LP recordings. It contains a cast of characters, a synopsis of scenes, and the dialogue of the opera in Italian with facing English translation.

= LEONARD BERNSTEIN (A Complete Catalogue of His Works [through 1978]) compiled by Jack Gottleib = Paperback booklet- This was compiled in honor of Bernstein’s 60th birthday. Works are listed first by Genre, and then again by chronology of creation. There is an extensive discography, including films and video tapes. Nice little commemorative.

= MUSIC OF MANY LANDS AND PEOPLES collected by McConathy, Beattie, and Morgan. = Hardcover, pub. Silver Burdett Co., New York 1932 . Old collection of short folk songs from many countries. arranged for voice and piano. Nice.

= MUSIC AND IMMAGINATION by Aaron Copland = Paperback , pub. McGraw–Hill New York 1952. Great, easy reading - Taken from Copland’s Charles Eliot Norton Lectures.

= TOSCA by Giacomo Puccini = Paperback - Complete Libretto - pub. I Ricordi 1956 - It contains a cast of characters, a synopsis of scenes, and the dialogue of the opera in Italian with facing English translation. If you do not know this Opera, you are missing an absolute MASTERPIECE! Pick up a CD recording, and follow along.

= TURANDOT by Giacomo Puccini = Glossy paperback - Complete Libretto - pub. John Calder - London 1984 - It contains a history of the opera, analysis, a cast of characters, a synopsis of scenes, photos of productions and costumes, and the dialogue of the opera in Italian with facing English translation. Another Puccini “Top of the Charts”! Pick up a CD recording, and follow along.

Clarinet (Bb) = DeCAPRIO CLARINET METHOD – Book 1 = by Domenico De Caprio , pub. Remick Music Corp. 1939 – Elementary to Intermediate+ in English – great condition.

Clarinet (Bb) = 30 SOLID GOLD SONGS = pub. Belwin Mills 1991 –Intermediate grade pop songs from the 1980s in easy keys – some pencil markings of accompaniment chords. (I don’t know WHO would have done that!)

Clarinet (Bb) = RUBANK ELEMENTARY METHOD by Nilo Hovey = pub. Rubank (div. Hal Leonard) orogonally 1933 – Great condition, a couple of pencil markings. These were THE method books of ALL method books for wind instruments, for years and years.

Greece and Rome, through the Twentieth Century) Paper cover is soiled, binding not the best, all pages are fine.

= THE STORY OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS by H.W. Schwartz = Hardcover, pub. by the Conn Band Instrument Division, Elkhart, IN. 1938. An exhaustive review of all Strings, all Woodwinds, all Brass, most Percussion, and their histories. Includes, on page 11, a range chart for all band and orchestra instruments as their ranges relate to the piano (keyboard). Nice shape, a little dusty.

Background history and information, plus the full scores for Prometheus, Coriolan, Leonore No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3, Fidelio, and Egmont. There is also a PIANO REDUCTION with each full score! Cover shows slight wear, fine condition.

= BEETHOVEN SYMPHONIES – All Nine of Them, in full score, but miniature format – (bring your reading glasses) = Paperback, pub Bonanza Books, New York. All instrumental and choral parts of all symphonies are complete. This format is fine for study, but is too small and condensed for conducting.

= MASS IN G MAJOR by Franz Schubert = Paperback. pub. E. F. Kalmus, New York. This is the vocal score to the work above, with piano reduction of the string orchestra parts. And again, “someone” had the bad taste to use pen to make some notes (NOT “notes”). Other than that, perfect condition.

= MISSA CHORALIS by Franz Liszt = Paperback, pub. Belwin Mills, New York. This is the vocal score for Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Baritone soloists, and full chorus, organ part. Perfect condition.

= NUTCRACKER SUITE by Peter Tchaikovsky (arranged for Chorus by Harry Simeone = Paperback, pub. Shawnee Press, Pa. This is the vocal score for Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Baritone chorus, with piano reduction of the orchestra part. Perfect condition.

Copland’s philosophy pf music, creativity, and life. “A civilization that produces no creative artists is either wholly provincial or wholly dead!” Great, easy reading. A little underlining here and there. Everything legible.

= IL TROVATORE by Giuseppe Verdi = Paperback - Complete Libretto - This is the booklet that came with the better opera LP recordings. It contains a cast of characters, a synopsis of scenes, and the dialogue of the opera in Italian with facing English translation.

= LEONARD BERNSTEIN (A Complete Catalogue of His Works [through 1978]) compiled by Jack Gottleib = Paperback booklet- This was compiled in honor of Bernstein’s 60th birthday. Works are listed first by Genre, and then again by chronology of creation. There is an extensive discography, including films and video tapes. Nice little commemorative.

= MUSIC OF MANY LANDS AND PEOPLES collected by McConathy, Beattie, and Morgan. = Hardcover, pub. Silver Burdett Co., New York 1932 . Old collection of short folk songs from many countries. arranged for voice and piano. Nice.

I Ricordi 1956 - It contains a cast of characters, a synopsis of scenes, and the dialogue of the opera in Italian with facing English translation. If you do not know this Opera, you are missing an absolute MASTERPIECE! Pick up a CD recording, and follow along.
