I'm contemplating moving a large Chickering square grand without recourse to professional movers. Does anyone know the weight of these monsters? Like a real weight, not "a lot," "I'd guess 1000 lbs," or "don't be an ass buying a square grand"--because I already know I'm an ass :P

Here's a couple pics:

Thanks gang!
Greg

The weight is one problem. The bigger problem is that there are no good gripping points on a square grand. It is your funeral!

I bought one of these once out of a house as a pretty ornament. My wife, my daughter, my neighbor, and I moved it. The legs unscrew. You need a dolly with fairly big, hard rubber wheels and a lot of muscle. It is not as heavy as it looks if you use leverage, but there are a lot of little things in the decorative edges that can get chipped off pretty easily if you aren't careful. I would have a pro do it if I had to again, although maybe that's because I am 63 now and was 45 then.

All excellent points. I'm actually still pondering whether to do it myself or not. I mean, I have this pickup truck just sitting here, along with dollies, straps, etc. Everything but the skid . . . and ramps . . . and bed extender . . . :P

And yes, Aldo, I'm starting a museum! I am also on the verge of nabbing an 1830-1840s Chickering & Mackays square grand. That one is a little lighter. smile

Do you have insurance to cover the damage to someone else's house?
