This must happen to giggers all the time. It bugs the heck out of me.
Example, you're asked to play a piece at a gathering and someone wants to ask you questions and chit chat about their day with you, as you are playing.
Another, you're finally getting a great run through on a number you have been working on for weeks and your spouse comes home with a friend, or perhaps your room mate comes home and they want your immediate attention. Hello, hello, hello until you finally have to stop and acknowledge the rudeness.
Hello ... back ... Do non musicians not think that it could involve a bit of concentration? Or, is this just common rudeness? Or, a bit of both.
You may have guessed, I have run into a few incidents of this of late and ranting a bit.

How many times have you actually stopped this person and explained to them that you're deep in concentration and at times like these are times you'd respectfully prefer to be left alone?
Non-musicians don't necessarily come with the understanding that someone sitting at a piano might be too busy to speak with them. As a musician you should understand that, instead of harvesting internal thoughts of annoyance towards them. That's equally disrespectful.

None, guilty as charged. Non-musicians don't necessarily come with the understanding that someone sitting at a piano might be too busy to speak with them. As a musician you should understand that, instead of harvesting internal thoughts of annoyance towards them. That's equally disrespectful.
Really?

Anyone asking me to play a piece at a gathering had better be aware of how poorly I play!

Anyone asking me to play a piece at a gathering had better be aware of how poorly I play! Same here, I could play a few nice nursery rhymes, but no one would want to hear that. I get frustrated when I go in to work early to practice on the piano there, but every two minutes someone opens the door to say "oh I thought it must be you in here, hello". And I stop myself saying "if you knew it was me, why come in and make me stop then?"

Say what? Although in some cases they could be, someone interrupting you while you play or practice may not necessarily be disrespectful - inconsiderate or thoughtless maybe...or lost in deep thoughts of their own...or just needing to tell you something fairly important before they leave, etc. But for crying out loud what is this "harvesting internal thoughts of annoyance" - what an unusual and awkward expression...politically correct maybe but all the more strange because of it...a harvest of crops, or a harvest of fish (or deer during hunting season), but a harvest of internal thoughts of annoyance? And internal thoughts as opposed to external ones? It's really hard to see how being annoyed when someone interrupts you when you're trying to concentrate on accomplishing something rather difficult at the piano (or doing just about anything) can be called "disrespectful" - normal & justified might be more like it. So then, harvest that if you please! Trap

If they hang on til Xmas I could play Jingle Bells from Alfred's. I get frustrated when I go in to work early to practice on the piano there, but every two minutes someone opens the door to say "oh I thought it must be you in here, hello". And I stop myself saying "if you knew it was me, why come in and make me stop then?" I used to live in a shared house and my Piano was in the lounge- couldn't stop people popping in but made me self conscious. So glad Piano and I got our own little house now.

7 Years ago, one of my jazz teachers said that professional musicians should be able to play while asking for a girl's phone number at the same time So I can say that I get interrupted all the time at gigs, even in the middle of a solo, and I'm still able to go on autopilot during those moments. This is part of the practice though and you learn to keep focused on the music through the smallest queues (I keep listening now matter what I am doing). It is irritating but fortunately, there are 4-6 people in my band and someone would look stupid coming close and having a chat. It's harder for a solo pianist to escape as they can hang around the piano.

This happens to me and I get it FROM musicians as well. I am playing and I am so into my piece and then someone walks in the room with 20 minutes left to class and even though I am playing he starts talking to me and asking me stuff and it's annoying.

Yeah, I have no idea why people think you can do this. Or think I can, as the case may be I do know some musicians who can - several fiddler friends of mine can have full conversations :\ But I have train wrecks. I do finally have the activities director at one of the assisted living homes trained to wait until I find a stopping place. I can listen, and I can nod yes or no, but talking back is beyond me at the minute. Even just looking up and smiling at the audience. I'm actually practicing that as part of a tune now. But talking. Nope. I guess it's a compliment. It's amazing to me, as such an obvious, to me, amateur, what people think I can do. Play in another key off the top of my head. Find the perfect tune at the spur of the minute to accompany the kids as they march in. Music is magic to many people. And if I can "sort of" pull it off they think it was terrific. But talk and play 16th notes? Not a possibility. Cathy

After many years of practice, I can carry on a conversation with someone and type a letter or email at the same time. And both are actually intelligent. I hope, someday, I can do this at the piano keyboard too!

There was an adorable old guy who played for ballet classes here years ago. He'd sit at the piano playing whatever the dance teacher asked for while reading a magazine. I'm quite sure he could have carried on a conversation at the same time.

Hey Trapper-- Harboring a few internal thoughts of annoyance of your own then, are you? Apparently, one doesn't harbor such thoughts - one harvests them (although one could harbor them after harvesting them) - it is a distinction with a difference - and before the harvest there was the planting of "the seeds of dissention" - but this is all very annoying after all...

My man the mechanic taught me that when his head is under the hood is no time for hiney pats n playful conversation and happily affords my piano and I the same courtesy. Although I never play with my head under the lid!
