#1967097 - 09/30/12 09:56 PM Where to buy replacement grating for a Schiedmayer celesta?

I recently bought a used Schiedmayer 5.5-Octave Studio Celesta that was made in the 1980s. Some of the brass grating on it is significantly dented. Schiedmayer uses the same grating in their recents celestas as they do in these older celestas. For instance, when I bought a 40-year-old Schiedmayer 5-octave Celesta five years ago and restored it, Schiedmayer was willing to provide me with replacement brass grating, and it worked perfectly and looked virtually identical to the older grating. My newly-acquired celesta has the same type of grating, which can be seen here:

Unfortunately, when I called Schiedmayer to inquire about replacement brass grating for my newly acquired 5.5-Octave Studio Celesta, they declined to provide me with replacement brass grating and refused to state a reason why they could not do so. They also made sure to tell me that I paid "too much" for it ($13,000, even though they sell them new for $41,000). I was very surprised by this change in customer service compared to the good customer service that I received when I was restoring my first celesta, especially given the fact that Schiedmayer still uses the same grating.

As Schiedmayer is not willing to help with this matter, I wonder if anyone might be able to recommend a place at which I can get the same or similar replacement brass grating for my Schiedmayer 5.5-Octave Studio Celesta. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

Wouldn't it be possible to repair it?

It looks like a standard hardware item.

It's called expanded metal. Do an internet search for brass expanded metal and you're bound to find a manufacturer/supplier who will sell you a sheet.

If you have no luck with an alternate product as suggested, send me a private note. I have many contacts in Germany and can bring in a lot of special order items.
best of luck.
