I don't see anything valuable about uniqueness for the sake of uniqueness. Nor would I say they're "trying to make a living" is a reason for praising something.

My praise for their music had nothing to do with their "trying to make a living". If I hear something musical, that is unique and different, and I like it, I will support it, it's as simple as that. Yes, they are trying to make a living, more power to them.

I repeat again, "To each his own".

Taking Bach and doing some movie music with it is nothing particularely innovative, but i can stand that.

I simply dont even recognize that music... I dont want to agress anyone, I just dont buy the whole concept, fine , no problem with me...

I bet that little girl at the start of the clip couldn't believe what her small donation would result in!! Half way through she's still just standing at the front near the bassist! I've wheeled a piano out of the classroom and into the playground at my school - my senior class sang Christmas carols to the junior school at recess as a completely impromptu concert - it gave the kids such a buzz to have a band playing just for them in the middle of their school yard!

I have to say that I feel groups such as ThePianoGuys provide a valuable bridge between youth and culture. As a school music teacher, I use clips such as these to introduce kids to classical music. After showing the 'you don't know you're beautiful' clip it provided the opportunity for a lesson of wonderful experimentation standing around an old, exposed upright with some of the kids playing 'heart and soul' while others stood around tapping a particular string or some percussive effect on the body. One of my senior students used 'Moonlight' to compare the original Beethoven composition with the modern effects incorporated in ThePianoGuys version.

If that is to be considered as a bridge to get the youngsters some interest in music, than the cultural level have swept down a lot.

What I dont like in those is the musical part, oversimplification as if it was intended to the dumb.

I can hear and appreciate any kind of music be it Jazz, "classical" , folklore, Cuban music and the like, RnR etc, (and I even can dance some of them so I know what I like to be moved on)

I am just a little overwhelmed with the level of impoverishment that goes along with mainstream culture, and I consider the ones playing that game as being some sort of "traitors" to my appreciation of music.

My son showed me multi replay of mounted videos with singers , often non professionals, and I like that. When professional musicians make that kind of product, with no substance, they just reflect a part of the world I am not at ease with !

Things such as this video, do not have to be to your acceptance levels Kamin. Tastes vary. For example, I personally like Elvis Presley. Some people can't stand him. So be it. It's their choice and mine. However, it is of my opinion, that it is NOT their right to come in here, intentionally be a PITA in trying to tell me that my choice is incorrect as you are doing regarding these videos. If you don't like it and you obviously do not, then go play in your own sand box with tape over your mouth instead of continually coming in here putting it down to others as if you are superior in some way because your tastes differ and do not agree with ours. You seem to be looking for some sort of argument or something? Just put a sock in it already...

Sorry ....too much speed fluctuation and variance in volume for my taste, a common freedom of expression amongst the musical elite(they are however great people to hang around on brutally sunny days since you can always stand in the shade cast by their upturned nose)...but I'm sure it sounds great to those people who know thats the way the composer wanted it sound...you know, the folks who have a time travel machine locked in their closet and regularly travel back to hear music played in past centuries.... oh well. As others have mentioned, everyone has their own taste.

Finally someone notices one of the important parts of that video. The little girl will remember that for a long time; it might even pique her interest in exploring music for herself.

If she is lucky enough to become a mother and encounters a situation of the same with her own children she might encourage her own daughter or son to go and do the same thing she did….



Yep. So now you have them interested. This is what can happen with instruments are not used in the traditional way. With an old upright the possible damage that may occur will not be important, but this is also a good time to educate and have a discussion with the students about proper care of musical instruments.

Expand this further and issue a challenge to the students.

Make it a school class year project, or an after school fun thing. Find an object that makes a sound, or find a way to use an instrument in an abstract way such as with the old upright. Then have the students make up a jug band, choose their own song and have some fun with music. Doesn’t matter of it sounds like crap…..The most important part is you have them away from the texting device and involved in exploring music which forms part of real life.

Any way to get today’s kids interested in music is a good thing I believe….

One of the best kept 'secrets' of this area is 'Tommy Fest', a two day guitar camp in the Elizabethtown area (80 miles to the north). I get to see Tommy Emmanuel live in a 300 seat venue.

The man is a conduit for music. There is no one quite like him.
