Hello everyone! I'm a new member in search of a teacher in the Los Angeles area (I'm actually in the San Fernando Valley). I started playing at the age of eight, and continued with my studies through college. Although life's normal commitments made it difficult to maintain that degree of proficiency, I've decided enough is enough: playing the instrument I have always loved has become a priority again. A recommendation for a teacher appropriate for an adult student would be very much appreciated.

Recommendation for teacher in LA:

DoctorKeys.com

Bruce Siegel gives private lessons in LA for $75 per hour. He has many videos on youtube and on the website. He teaches people at all levels of talent and training. Check it out.

Call Old Town Music in Pasadena. They keep a referral list of active teacher including the SF Valley.

42 East Colorado Boulevard Pasadena, CA 91105
(626) 793-4730

Hollywood Piano (Burbank) or Keyboard Concepts should be able to give you some names as well.

I'm just curious, but how important is it for a teacher to be certified to instruct? I'm sure you get pianists (teachers) who have degrees in music and can play their teeth off but have no certification.

I guess it's variable and depends on an individual basis, but am thinking certification helps formulate some type of plan for students?

Thanks to Bobpickle and KurtZ for your recommendations.

monads, I simply don't know what is involved in certifying a piano teacher, but maybe someone here could clarify a bit...?

MTNA

There's also MTAC here in Caflifornia but as far as I know there's no certification process for teachers through them.

Personally, I don't put that much stock in paper. I look for real world experience and good communication skills.

I know this is an ages ago conversation, but I thought I'd throw in my two-cents on certified piano teachers: Being MTNA certified really doesn't signify much. (My apologies if you are a certified teacher or anyone who takes offense to that statement.. It's nothing personal. But I think we can all agree that MTNA certification is not at all like the PTG certification for piano technicians.)

There are a few regions in the country that tend to have more MTNA certified teachers, but that's mostly out of popularity. In some areas, the certification process can be alarmingly political.

You rarely hear of MTNA certification in California partly because California's MTAC is more deeply entrenched. The CAPMT came to California long after MTAC had already widely established itself, so the MTNA has not been able to develop as big of a traction in California as you will find in other states.

So, unfortunately, as an Angeleno looking for a quality piano teacher (which, hopefully you've found by now!), there isn't a magic qualification/certification to look for, to help you in your search. You just have to do the trials, and go with your gut.
