Also check out PreSonus Studio One, which comes in several versions including a free one and a quite full-featured Artist version for $100. It's available for both PC and Mac, and receives excellent support from the manufacturer and a very large user community. You can learn more at http://studioone.presonus.com.

Look into Mixcraft from acuostica.com. Just released a new version. Similar to Garageband.

I`ve tried Audacity which is free but possibly for a time only. There is also WavePad Sound Editor which is similar. This is free. Others are out there too. I`m trying the free NIDI ones to get used to doing stuff. Damn, I wish I had more time . . . and something other than scrabled eggs for a brain ha ha

There is also WavePad Sound Editor which is similar. This is free. Yeah, this one works very well and easy to use. Will do most things.
