Just curious - I know someone who is selling an HP203 that's been used very little. I'm also wondering how it might compare to my Yamaha P-155. Any thoughts/opinions appreciated.

Cheers!

Spec wise they are very similar, but I think you should try it out first to be able to make a decision. The biggest advantage I see is that you have fixed pedals on the Roland. (If I googled right, the P155 is a slab.)

When searching for a digital piano four years ago, I tried the Roland HP203. It was offered at $2000. But I did not like the sound (too dull). Nor did I like the cabinet (cheap looking).

As jhm suggests, try it before you buy.

As for value ... that will depend on location. But it might be a reasonable choice at $1000. At $1500 there are other, better choices (brand-new with warranty).

@UpNorth,

You might want to look at the new Kawai ES7, as it has a lot of offer, at 2K:

It would have far better speakers and polyphony, over the P-155.

And, you would have a three-sensor action for best response.

I can likely get the HP203 for about $900-$950, but it's out of town and I can't easily get there to try it out. If there was overwhelming opinion that the HP203 is superior to my P155, then I might go for it. Otherwise, I'll likely just stick with the P155 with the idea that I may go with something nicer (ES7, FP7F, etc.) in 6-12 months.

Thanks for all of this info!

That sounds like the best idea, really. The ES7 and FP7f are very much better and more interesting prospects, each in their own way.

If you're looking for a better keyboard action or better sound ... then skip the HP203.
You'll have to spend MUCH more to get something much better. Suggestion: Kawai CA65. Short of that, all you'd be doing is trading a slab for a cabinet.

So, back to you: What sort of improvement are you looking for?

I'm not so much out there actively looking for an improvement to my P-155 as I was trying to evaluate how much better the HP203 "might" be over the P-155. My basic thought process went something like "...if the HP203 is a lot nicer in terms of action/feel and sound reproduction, and I can get an essentially new one cheaply, and then sell my P155, I might end up with a better DP for not much extra money". It's a pretty sketchy plan though with lots of failure points - and the big ones are what people here have pointed out.

Thanks again - this was very useful to me!
