Andras Schiff offered a discourse on why he justifies playing Bach on the piano-but in the course of a lengthy presentation he devoted discussion to the harpsichord and its limitations.

This set in motion a bit of a joust between him and Elaine Comparone, a very great harpsichordist. This may be worth a few chuckles.

in his programnotes for his live-recording of the Goldbergvariations in Basel (CH) he states that more than 75 minutes of harpsichord is too much, that's why he prefers the piano, I totally agree (and rate that recording among the best ever made).

I can't understand such a statement. I wish, for one thing, that he would use some discriminate pedal, and not deliver such a dry performance. I much prefer Perahia's Goldberg Variations, and all his Bach compared to Schiff.

I've listened to hours of Elaine Comparone's harpsichord playing, and don't find her great artistry to be too much. Same would apply to the late, Wanda Landowska.

I love harpsichord music. For 20 years I played/owned a harpsichord and virtually didn't touch my piano. So I am amazed at the hyperbole about Elaine Comparone. It is as if Landowska, Leonhardt, Tilney, Koopman, Pinnock and many others I simply cannot call to mind never existed. I bought my harpsichord in 1972 and the instrument was by no means obscure or relegated to continuo duties then.

I'm not knocking her performances - haven't heard them except in the clips above. But she certainly has not rescued the harpsichord from obscurity.

Thank you for posting this. When it comes to Bach, Schiff is the greatest in my opinion.

I enjoyed the video very much, but where's the humor (or humour) as announced in the title? Is this really a duel, or is it just a preference for different media to deliver the composer's message?

Regards,

IMO, 75 minutes of Andras Schiff is too much.
