Adam, it is unfortunate, but a reality, we live in a contentious filled world.

A part of the problem, in contention, is the unreasonable and implacable.

There is obviously more to it than that, but for the sake of not being contentious, I will leave it at that.

Regards,

Today I got my new MacBook Air. The old MacBook Pro still worked, but some of the mechanical parts were wearing out. The solid state drive makes a big difference!

Been doing year end all week. Closing out the books for 2013, P&L, depreciation on vehicles and tools, counting all of the parts, supplies, instruments, and then opening figures for 2014. Office work is not my favorite activity.

Today is an estimated tax day in the US. I got mine in yesterday, though. I also got a notice about sales tax, which is due at the end of the month.

I cannot do my income taxes until I get my brokerage statement, which is usually not final until some time in March.

In think I worked on the most expensive piano I've serviced to date. A Heinrich Steinway 200th anniversary art case L in rosewood. Hardly played. It was only about 10 cents flat, but the action is a little stiff from disuse.

Roger Williams and Henry Z. signed it:

I was a little shocked to see this lack of QC. Kind of blatant, IMO:

The owners are huge patrons at the SDO; they contribute in the millions.

It turns out the opera office has been referring people to me for work over the tech who is contracted to tune *their* pianos.

Oops, a little bit of over-spray. Oh, well...
I had no idea Steinway would first instal the dampers, then spray the plate. wink

Had they built this special anniversary series of piano closer to Heinrich E Steinway's birthplace, say in Hamburg, you can rest assured you would not find this kind of thing.

It might have been a repair, not necessarily done by Steinway. Still...

Absolutely!

Yes, I find it odd to see gold overspray on a damper head, of all things. Maybe it was a post-production touch-up gone bad?

I doubt that it was a post-purchase repair. Maybe at the dealership?

You could probably wash it off with paint thinner. Gold paint will often do that. Not anything stronger, though, like lacquer thinner or acetone.

I'm a little jealous. It looks so warm and sunny there. We are out of school today for our 17th snow day this year. I'm getting behind with my students at school (and we have music contest coming up), but using the days to get caught up on piano tunings. I had five today. We have about four inches of snow on the ground and my feet are still cold from the day!

Well, Ryan, it got up to the high 60's today, if that helps...

I find it fascinating that for such an anniversary model, Steinway & Sons would revert to Henry's original German first name(s), but not the surname. If "Steinweg" is too German, or there are brand dilution issues with Grotrian Steinweg, then why bother with "Heinrich"?

A concert at a theater, plus some touch-up on a piano in a rehearsal studio at the same place. Some rough discussions about how to charge for using the piano.

If you go back and look carefully at the plate bar in the photo there is a scratch and chip on top that someone attempted to repair rather unsuccessfully.

Yes, Dan, I saw those, but they looked like they hadn't been repaired at all; like they were after the fact. And no, I didn't do the damage... wink laugh

Possibly were not repaired. And there may have been other damage there that we cannot see any longer due to someone waving a gold spray can around with little in the way of direction.

I was dining last night at a restaurant. They have a 1936 Baldwin Grand that I service. It's one of those pianos that sat dormant for years. A few year's back I got it going for them. It's in very nice shape for a piano of that age.

Well, tonight there was a bluegrass group having a "jam session." A lady playing a harmonica in the group, proceeded to place her cup of water right on top of the piano, no coaster or anything. Directly on the lid. I about had a heart attack. In the calmest voice I could muster, I asked her if she would kindly place her drink somewhere else. She gave me a funny look, I said, I'm sorry I'm the piano tuner.

The nerve of people!

Ryan, I think it was perfectly appropriate for you to make that request.

OTOH, you should see the multiple, sticky rings from drinks set on the Shout House pianos I clean off every week...
