third pedal by ...,

This piece is called "Main theme" By auriplane from the game Star Wish (its good). I'm having a go.

Ok here is my understanding.

The whole note on the bass cleff is an F + a lower octave F, which is a whole note thus 4 beats.

Except how on earth do I hold down the F+F for the 4 beats, when the next two notes are C and then F. It's simply TOO wide for my hands to hold and hit the next could of notes.

The next measure is worse. With G + G then G -> C I'm pretty sure my hand is not wide enough to play that.

As an interim measure I've considered, only one of the notes the top one so my hand can stretch to play the other two notes

Using my FOOT to play the lowest note, like this:

Or spending £10,000 on a piano with a Sostenuto pedal which will sustain those two notes. And only those notes. Which is frankly ridiculous.

What is your advice? Piano teacher is away this week so can't ask her.

Thanks

EDIT this is the complete piece if you're interested

From a quick look, I expect you can just pedal thru the entire first bar, change when you get to the octave Gs in the 2nd,... Any dissonant notes are high enough in the treble that they won't be jarring. You could also clean up the sound by some judicious use of half pedal if you want a cleaner sound thru the bar.

I agree. Just use the damper pedal at the beginning of each measure. The melody is so high in the treble that those notes won't sustain very long anyway, so you should be able to shape the melody to sound fine against the middle voice even with the damper sustaining the left hand. Sostenuto is very seldom a necessity for these kinds of pedal points.

Yeah, I agree. The only note that would present an issue is the F on beat 4 of the first measure. I would also redistribute the 2nd half of the 2nd beat in both measures to the left hand.

In the original MIDI composition, it's just set to use the sustain pedal for each measure, pretty much.

This is probably my fault, since I never got around to making sheet music. Sorry about that! :-)

Hah, how often does the arranger of a piece randomly pop up to help out with a question; small world.
