Is there a straight strung birdcage behind all that gross ornate overkill?

Is this possibly a fine piano worth $17.5 grand and I am a hopeless cynic?

If I am ever that far north of town I might go by and ask to play it just for grins.

While the asking price of that piano is surely wishful thinking, the rest of your post displays your sheltered life regarding experience and knowledge of pianos.

Experience and knowledge is all relative. If I were a tuner or tech my questions and comments might be justifiably considered naive. But as a piano player and hobbyist? And I am curious what likely lies behind all the carving and etc.

I kind of like the carving, especially the little lions or gargoyles or whatever they are, but not for my house. Or even my castle, if I had one. And certainly if I had a 17.5K budget for a piano, I'd make a different choice.

If you're in the neighborhood why not go play it?!

About 25 miles from here. I would be totally wasting their time as I could think of far better ways to spend $17.5 k. Just curiosity. I wonder if they would let me look inside? To me, its less the carving than the candles and handles are overkill.

That is a huge gaffe from an antiques dealer. It is even more suspect when two of the bobèche are upside down.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and fools are soon parted from their money.

Likely what lies behind the carvings is the popular style of the time. Some like ornate while others lean more towards the utilitarian styles.

Side handles and sconces where also popular during this period.

The candle holders usually were threaded so the wax tray can be removed, cleaned and replaced. A lot of this type of detail was massed produced by machinery rather than hand carved. Hydraulic stamping is common…….

Zeiter & Winkleman made quality instruments and this could be straight strung or possibly over-strung. I have come across both of this time period.

Because the business is called the Antique Gallery does not mean the owner is an antique specialist.

It is obvious that who's selling this piano has no idea what is selling... only read " Solid Ivory Keys " ,Equivalent of Steinway? Really?... Equivalent of Steinway in Europe in this years were Erard not this brand.

Consider the title of this thread. I got a huge laugh about the asking price for that Victorian, Rococo Fantasy.

We can certainly assume that the visage on the piano is of Jenny Lind as this instrument was her personal instrument. We all know that she insisted upon having solid ivory keys.

It's documented, look it up.

I sure don't have the ear of the tuner/techs on this forum, but I am tempted to go play it on a day off next week and report how it sounds/plays to the best of my ability.

Not sure if I can keep a straight face to persuade them I am a potential serious buyer, however.

How did the kids get better, and need a better piano, if they couldn't get to that piano to practice on?

Indeed, I am curious what lies behind all the ornate fluffery, so that is my technical question. I guess I will have to drive 25 miles or so to Round Rock if I care enough to find out.

Read the title of this thread and look back at its history. You're posting is just in the wrong place and if you would have started a thread with your questions, it would have been addressed in a different manner.

I posted in "Funny Craiglist Piano Listings" because I did think it was kind of funny that somebody would want $17.5k for that piano, describe it as having "solid ivory keys," and etc. This is in line with many of the posts in this thread where a piano is advertised for a very high price with extravagant claims made. My questions were half rhetorical and half curiosity. Not a big deal if they get answered or not -- maybe they are not worthy of an answer. Sure not worth starting a feud over. If I happen to get up to Round Rock I will report how this $17.5k (!!) instrument sounds.

I think the kids were playing with the train and the school bus, rather than playing the piano.
