My Piano : The book is an excursions guide to Liverpool and New Brighton from 1904. Piano is from circa 1910. Close up of old celluloid keys!

Beautiful! There is something about playing an old piano. The connection with all the people that sat there before you did. An almost reverence for all the hours they put into their practice and accordingly a certain duty to your own practice to be worthy to play the same instrument they did.

Thank you SoundThumb- this is how it is with myself and Piano- I know some of his history- one of his previous owners in the 1920s (name written inside under the keys) and know where the shop used to be where he came from! I wonder a lot who else played Piano and what music was played on him. He has a lovely old smell too.

Kathy Thank you Kathy- Piano has quite a deep mellow sound but his higher notes are a bit tinkly now due to his age. He is a semi tone down from concert pitch but I don't mind that.

You have a beautiful instrument, Edward. I love old pianos. Thank you Recaredo.I much prefer old pianos too- I feel there's something special about this piano. I rescued him in a way- he was advertised on freecycle from a couple who didn't need him anymore. My heart was yearning for a piano but I was unemployed and broke. I was recovering from chronic eczema- Piano helped in my healing. He needed a home and I needed a piano. He wasn't perfect and I was damaged with a skin condition. We are right together. I love antiques and history. I only hope one day I can play him well.

The old grand piano I play, you can see the finger wear on the keys. Less pleasantly, is the stood which is also very old. Its made from solid wood with no padding. You can see the bum crease impressions that people over a century have made

An astounding elegant piano filled with character: THIS is why I want a second hand piano. Thank you Foxes! One has to be careful with an antique piano though- mine needed quite a bit of refurbishment and even now is 80% of what he once was ( in 1910s!), so if you look for one it is a good idea to know a good piano technician.

Not as much as I'd like. Some other people discovered it and have started locking it after 8am. So I don't get a lunch time playing session.
