If you suddenly came into a large sum of money, would you buy a different piano, or invest it for your retirement? Are you currently satisfied? Buy cars, high tech stuff, maybe have a player device installed on your current piano?

Currently satisfied. I feel I'm at the happy point in the cost/benefit curve where upgrading would necessitate a lot more money for rapidly diminishing improvements in sound/action. smile

Currently satisfied pianowise. Retirement pretty much taken care of. I'd probably do some house remodeling and more European travel.

If I came into a lot of money ... I'd be rich.

I'd still keep my N3 though would place it in a bigger house.

First, I'd pay off all by debt... which I almost have enough money to do now, but then I'd be broke. smile

Next, I'd build a bigger house/music room and fill it with acoustic pianos of various makes. grin

I paid off debt, bought a nice house in the south, and bought a Mason-Hamlin BB. Oh, that's if I got a lot of money? Well...

Perfectly rebuild a German piano of my choosing from the golden age, then build a house around it.

How much is a "large sum of money?"

Are we talking thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions? $50 is a large sum of money to my 9 year old son. Not so to most people here.

If we are talking thousands or hundreds of thousands, I imagine it would be invested for the future and for my son's education. I have no debt to worry about other than a small mortgage that is less than 1/3 the value of my home.

Were we speaking of millions . . . well, that would be something else entirely. In that case a small amount would be "blown" on frivolous purchases, some would be donated, and some would be invested. I might consider a slightly larger home with a dedicated library/music room as well. There to enjoy my two favorite inanimate objects, a piano and books . . . many, many books.

Who is rich? The one who is appreciates what he has...
(See Pirkei Avot, Chapter 4: http://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/2032/jewish/Chapter-Four.htm )

Now, to answer your question: we'd all stay home and practice the piano 8 hours/day!

I would have a piano lesson every day, or every day I practice. So much more efficient with a teacher...

Now that would be great. Assuming that "a lot of money" is like heaps and heaps of it, something like a "Personal Trainer" who came to the house daily and stayed with you while you practised for say 2 hours each day. Daily masterclasses.

After a quite unplanned visit to Allegro Piano last Saturday morning (NYC piano row), I'd have to say, without hesitation, that no piano on the floor, and there were/are MANY superb Bosendorfers, Bluthners and vintage Steinways, could compare to the Steingraebers. They truly are wonderful instruments.

With MY sudden windfall, I'd have to have a BIG, new Steingraeber.

I don't know what we'd do - pay off the mortgage, do some remodeling, some travel, and I'd definitely do something pianowise (have mine totally rebuilt or buy new).

I'd sure like the chance to find out. C'mon Publisher's Clearing House! wink

Matter of taste, of course, but I'd agree.

This. In order for it to be piano related, I'd have to "come into" a lot of money. I live in a trailer, so it'd have to be enough to purchase house and piano both.
Assuming that, I'd purchase a home that met our needs and left me plenty of room for a large music room. I play guitar, bass and piano.
I'd set up a music room with a brand new, very powerful computer designed for music recording, along with the appropriate digital interface/mixer and mics and other necessary studio equipment(including room treatment), guitar/bass amps(got all the guitars I'll ever need. I build them). The centerpiece would be a 6 ft grand. Probably a nice Yamaha or Kawai.

If I come into a large sum of money any time soon I'll finally be able get the piano tuned. Things have gotten a little lean lately.
