The latest Clavier Companion arrived today, and there is a most thoughtful, insightful and interesting Letter to the Editor concerning Yuja Wang and her pedagogy. Subscribers, what do you think?

John, don't be such a tease. Give us some idea of the letter's content. Lady Chen and I might be reading this issue after New Year's.

And what about us poor non-subscriber parent types whose interest you have now greatly piqued? Do we need to become subscribers??

And what about us poor non-subscriber parent types whose interest you have now greatly piqued? Do we need to become subscribers?? It would help them greatly if students and parents subscribed! And that would help your teacher have a better teaching resource, and ultimately benefit your student.

John, don't be such a tease. Give us some idea of the letter's content. Lady Chen and I might be reading this issue after New Year's. Peter, I sincerely hope you don't have to wait that long! The previous issue had an article on Yuja Wang, but addressed almost nothing about the pedagogy involved teaching such a gifted student. I raised that question, and actually, received a very nice and thoughtful reply from editor Pete Jutras. I wish I could share his response here, but suspect that would violate implied confidentiality of correspondence. Probably the years of dealing with pedagogy issues here on PW helped me realize that our professional journals might also focus a bit sharper on pedagogy issues!

Bravo for your letter, John. Clavier Companion fashions itself as a pedagogy publication above all, so I'm pleased they included your thoughts and insights on the teaching of a prodigy.

You can read a few pages, but just a few before it cuts you off. Do subscribe. It's worth it.

Well, right after I said I didn't get it...I got it in the mail. I noticed the same exact thing while reading that article. In agreement with you.

You posed some great questions in your letter, John. I hope the magazine listens!

John, the postman rang once yesterday, and delivered your letter. It's very fine, raising important piano teaching issues both firmly and gently. It would indeed be interesting to learn far more about Yuja Wang's early piano work and family involvement, since these are issues we deal with as teachers every day.

Thanks, Peter. Yes, obviously this bothered me enough to compose a letter. And the editor, Pete Jutras, responded very positively. I hope it translates into a more useable journal for us teachers.
On the pages of PW, day in and day out, these issues are raised, making PW one of the, if not the, premier pedagogy forum of our time. Print publications need to pay attention or continue to lose readership. Personally, I love the print format as it's tangible, in the hands (and not battery operated!). It has the luxury of time to explore issues in depth. Electronic media, like PW, has the ability to answer teacher's questions quickly, and with significant participation, can insure the questioner doesn't get blind sided with a one approach fits all answer.

John, the postman rang once yesterday
Ha Ha! Proof that the postman doesn't always ring twice.
