I am Marcos Ramirez from Costa Rica, I traying rebuilt a very old upright Collar&Collard, "cagebird" action, carved legs, but I can not find the serial number,
I deeply appreciate your help in this case, it is is a fantastic instrument with all original parts and I want to know the age.
Thank you very much in advence for your advises.

Quite beautiful, but also quite limiting in what will come out of it, tonally and touch wise.

I would guess its age at 1885, give or take a few years.

Would be nice to see the action!

The damping mechanism, and straight strung design, are usually the limiting factors in pianos like this. I've not encountered a C&C upright, but I know they were very innovative in the grand making side of things. So perhaps they produced a decent birdcage action. I've seen one or two that damp properly. The action itself is probably quite nonstandard. If it has jack return helper springs attached to the hammer butts then you will find they can regulate very closely, but that is pure speculation on my part that it may have them.

Beautiful looking piano. Good luck with the restoration! If you work on restoring the painting, try not to do what this woman did:

wink

The best company to talk to about birdcage action replacement parts and felts is Fletcher & Newman in England. http://www.fletcher-newman.co.uk/
They may or may not be able to ship to you though.

The museum where this happened has seen attendance jump significantly since the amateur art restorer butchered up this fresco. They all want to see the damage up close and personal

She is now planning on a lawsuit for revenue from the "rights" to the new image she created.

Can you believe some folks....

The only parts specifically for overdamper actions I see on their site are damper felts (strongly advised not to tackle replacing overdampers) and hammers.

On a piano such as this, one should not let the exterior let a person get carried away about "rebuilding" the action. If you can get it to play somewhat reliably and get the tuning pins and block to hold a tuning at pitch, its best to leave it be at that.

Sometimes you only find out how deep the can of worms is after you have opened the lid...
