I have seen several piano benches that are higher in the back and slope forward. Supposedly they help with back trouble. They are called ergonomic benches I think. Has anyone tried any of these? If so, how do they compare to regular artist benches? Do they help? Do you feel like you are sliding downhill? Which brand or model do you have?

Take a normal bench, slightly prop up the rear legs. Done smile

I practice that way almost all the time. It helps keep my posture correct. Here's what I do.

I have a regular bench with a music compartment. The hinges face toward the piano. I open the lid and put a length of a 2x4 between the lid (seat) and the frame. This is more convenient than under the legs (which I tried at first), since I can move the bench around as usual. It's also more stable.

The benches or chairs I've seen with sloped seats don't seem like they have as much of a slope as this arrangement.

I have 2 of these, they are that good, and I suspect a lot less expensive. wink

Tried to prop up the rear legs and ergo cushion methods. Because both are noy quite practical I considered buying one of these special ergonomic benches with a sloped seat thar are commercially available:

The ergonomic piano bench 'D. Habermann' made by 'Lanzani, Italy'. When trying to order they let me know it was no longer available as the owner, Mr. Lanzani, died a few weeks ago:

Habermann

Lanzani

Other brands/models:
Burghardt B 2001

Andexinger alpha/beta/gamma & 484 ergo

Finally I did not buy either of all these but am awaiting delivery within the next two weeks of a very special one - 'the MiShu bench' that is even not available from piano stores but directly from the manufacturer in Germany:

MiShu

For those who understand German, there is a nice video demonstrating the principle the chair is based on:

While I admit that ergonomically, a bench that is sloped slightly forward may be appealing, I would also caution that there is no substitute for good technique at the piano. If you are considering a bench like this because of discomfort or pain I think a good teacher, perhaps one versed in the Taubman Approach, or a similar technique would be most useful.

My 2 cents,

Thanks, everyone. Rich: I am not considering buying one, but thought that I might simulate the experience with a pillow similar to Grandpianoman's post if the angle seems to help people. I am looking forward to my new Mason-Hamlin bench that you are sending me.
